My friend confided to me that she had been sexually abused by a number of men as a child. I was shocked but not fazed, and basically counselled her. She has problems with her nerves and things but we tried to work through it and I would relive the bad experiences with her through going back to when it happened. It was a massive eye opener for me and helped me to understand some of her past behaviour. I will always be there for anyone who has been sexually abused because in my opinion it can be intensely damaging and difficult to come to terms with. I have probably the highest respect and admiration for survivors of abuse because the willpower, both mentally and physically to overcome what they've been through is immense.

She may not have a problem with you.

She may however have a problem with the situation.
She may have been abused herself
She may know of someone who has been abused, and feels guilty that she hasnt told anyone
She may not know what to say to you
She may feel overcome with sadness and doesnt know what to do with her feelings.

Maybe you have set a trigger with your parnters step mum?

These could be a possibility that she was abused as a child herself and never opened up about it.

I'm sorry You had to go through that op, i was abused as a child and it will always be with me but it does get easier with time. Talking helps thanks

I havent told many people in my life.. Just 4 people, including my partner.. None of my family know..

I was 9 and was sexually abused by a neighbour for a length of time..

In a conversation i stupidly told my partners step mum..
She now doesn't talk to me, and i dont really understand why.
When my partner asked her why, she says she hasnt got a problem with me, but she clearly has ever since i told her, she literally hasnt spoken to me...

So wanted to know how people would feel / react if told this..

Thanks for the people who have answered

I'd feel sad for them and angry at whoever had done it. Why are you asking, OP?

Sunnywithshowers Wed 20-Feb-13 00:18:09

Sad, and angry for them.

There are several adults in my life who have been abused as children sad

I would feel very sad for them and be there if they needed to talk.

Do you need someone to listen?

My first reaction?

I'd offer to listen and to be there for them on their terms.
