Token wedding gift - lottery ticket inappropriate?

A colleague is getting married so I thought I'd do a card and token gift. I'm running out of time and ideas and wondered if a fiver's worth of lottery tickets / scratch cards was something I could give....or is this a stupid idea? (Obviously, I'm not going to the wedding!).

I'd use that money to buy a very nice card and write something thoughtful in it

I will buy a nice card and write something thoughtful too. My colleague has a very relaxed attitude to her big day so I don't think she'll be offended (although wanted to check here in case everyone thought it was a terrible idea).

Ah, that's a lovely idea with memorable numbers. I can probably find some memorable dates for them on Facebook (engagement, birthdays etc) and obviously the wedding date will have to be first one. Thank you!

I hope not, because that us what I've done as a guest at a wedding when hard up!
As PP suggested, I tried to make the numbers relevant/memorable etc

Make sure they aren't religious / anti gambling.
I'd much prefer a donation made to a charity I support.

I'd say it would strongly depend on the people. I'd say it's a pretty quirky token gift, but you never know if someone has a history of gambling addiction or whatever!

If it's a female colleague I would do a mini "post wedding recovery" kit, with some nice smelling bubble bath, a scented candle and a huge bar of chocolate in it.

It's a little safer than lottery tickets.

I think if you know they are not likely to be offended by this (they don't have views on gambling etc.) then this is rather a nice idea.

I don't gamble or do the lottery, however if someone did this for me I would think it was really sweet and fun.

I would love lottery tickets. I think it is a great idea but I wouldn't give scratch cards. They look a bit tacky I think. Can you imagine if the lottery ticket won. It would be the best present ever!!!!

I had this as a wedding present and thought it was nice. Can you choose numbers matching the wedding date?

I did worry though that if I won I would feel obliged to share the money with whoever bought the ticket (we didn't win luckily so not an issue )
