Food that goes together....

We really want fish and chips for the main meal at our wedding - but what sort of canapés/starters go with that? We want relaxed and informal, but filling (I'm always starving when I go to weddings!). Also has to be relatively family/child/baby friendly as 30% of our guest list will be under 12yo.

Help!

I'd say you don't necessarily need starters/canapes if you are having an informal supper rather than a formal three course meal.

If you really want to serve canapes how about things like Thai marinated king prawns or smoked mackrel pate on crisp toast.

Make sure you serve mushy peas and/or peas with the fish and chips too!

I always think of cannapes as posh, and fish and chips as not posh really - so hard to think of a match other than crisps and peanuts!

But if you want posh canapes first, then go for whatever you like. Little tartlets or fishy nibbles would probably go well. Mini pizzas are very popular with kids, as are cocktail sausages.

A hedgehog is good for the kids- an upturned half melon with cocktail sticks with cheese, pineapple and mini pickled onions.

Mini pizzas, cocktail sausages and a hedgehog sound great! It's not like we want posh food - we want yummy filling food for people to snack on while we circulate/do photos before the main meal. I just don't know what else to call them, than canapés!

Oh, and mushy peas - of course!

I think you need the mushy peas with the fish and chips, not as canapes - they're not the best finger food Grin

Now that would make for an interesting wedding - mushy pea stains on everyone's clothing!
