The hail storm in Surrey earlier was indeed rather spectacular.

Does your nan read the express?

Yes some areas are likely to see thunderstorms on Saturday. Some of them could be quite vigorous with perhaps some incidents of large hail Unlikely that they will be baseball sized like the express suggests, that would be beyond exceptional for the UK.

Hail is a common part of thunderstorms.

There already is a warning for heavy rain on Saturday. met office

Not all areas will see the storms if they initiate so the warning area will be refined.

My weather app on my phone lock screen has told me about 4 times that I'm in the middle of a thunderstorm. I'm beginning to think they pick a weather condition out of a hat each day and report that.

That should have said last week. Each time clear skies and a slight breeze.

I want my thunderstorm!!

Grin I keep an occasional eye on weather headlines and the Express is infamous for its fantasies in forecasting.

if you want your thunderstorms you want to move to the states. they have some humdingers.

My initial rough estimate for the location of the worst of the storms is southern and central midlands shifting eastwards through the day. I could however be entirely wrong! North Eastern France looks to get some spectacular stuff.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/06/2014 07:58

Central east France also looks rather wow and has also a good chance of severe storms Sunday too, with CAPE forecast at the top of the scale.

Still looks like the midlands perhaps through to Lincolnshire and perhaps just scraping north of the region. seem to be in the firing line. The SE may catch some too. Sunday in parts of France is the place to be though for storm lovers.

Oh no. How is Sutton Coldfield looking from 3pm on Saturday? I have a 10k race to do for Race for Life then, and all I have bought in preparation is a pink top and 3 quarter leggings to keep me cool, as last time I did it, it was quite warm :/

Absolutely impossible to say Im afraid yet the above narrowing down is as far as is possible with the models I have access to. Even in the highest risk areas some will have storms and some will not and thats only of course if the storms do actually kick off. However there is a reasonable probability of getting wet. It doesnt actually look cold though - temps in the mid-high teens.

oh bugger. do you think the hire car firm will charge me if there are dents in the roof?

I honestly don't know blackeyedsusan. It depends on insurance. In the States storm chasers usually seem to get away

Thanks kitten, at least I won't be cold!

Nicely balanced article threebats :) the express - that well known bastion of high level forecasting.

It does get me a bit cross because then people get muddled, think the met office have been saying these things then lambast the met office for getting it wrong.

Going to have a look at the latest risk, back soon :)

Ok my thoughts....

Many of those in the south will wake up to very, potentially very heavy rain with some embedded thunderstorms. I don't believe these thunderstorms will in general be severe in nature other than the flash flood risk.

There is a greater chance of more severe thunderstorms in some spots. At the moment I think that area is Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, moving through to Lincolnshire.

Temps look to be fairly suppressed, getting into the low 20s at best.

These thoughts may well change as new model data comes in.

I ought to put in my usual disclaimer: I'm only an amateur. I do get forecasts wrong. Please don't make important decisions based on my ramblings.
