The link has gone now sadly but Gloria is right, it had a huge role to play. British Meteorologists identified a brief lull in the stormy weather which German meteorologists hadn't spotted, partly down to the British having broken their code and so having access to their forecast data and partly due to the Allies having a good network of weather stations over the Atlantic and Canada etc.

good summary
