From Cheshire to West Yorks. Non urgent trip to visit friend, would be a pain but not impossible to reshedule. DH and 3 year old in car. looking to travel in morning and come home teatime. Will kick myself if I cancel and there's no snow at all, but then I don't know if I can relax and enjoy myself if I'm watching the sky all day.

Advice, please.

bump for you - you need someone local!

I'm not there, but if it helps, no sign of snow in sheffield, which I realise is a bit further south - but none in York today when I visited either, so I'd go for it

Am in East Lancs and no snow here.
You need someone Huddersfield way, I think.

In York there's been a little snow overnight for the past couple of nights but melting away during the day.

Bit more snow in York today. About a couple of inches I think

Snow in Leeds, just off the M62 and still snowing but roads pretty clear. I have to go the other direction tomorrow to East Lancs!

I'm in/near Huddersfield/Holmfirth. There is snow here and we're quite low down. Looks like there's more higher up (can see hills from here).

I can keep updating you through the day if you like? I'm planning to pretend I'm working (ie MNing) for parts of the day?

Which road were you planning to use?

I'm in Huddersfield, but low. We have about 1cm of snow today. It is unusual for us to get snow so low, so I imagine it is deeper on the tops. Why not have a look at the AA website and see if Snake Pass, Woodhead Pass, Holme Moss and/or the Skye Road (A62) are open? If any of them aren't, means big snow on the hills. Might be going to Holmfirth this afternoon, will see if I can find out anything about Holme Moss then. The M62 always stays open though unless snow is VERY deep, run ourt of grit, accident etc. Keep and eye on traffic reports, weather forecast and use mainest road ie: M62.

I have to return the DC to exH in London tomorrow, really not confident trains will be running, but I'm hoping the M1 will be clear. Bloody nightmare!

The useless BBC site doesn't recognise "The Pennines" or "Snake Pass"! So didn't find either traffic or weather reports.

But the transpennines routes are very exposed and normally amongst the first to become impassable.

What would be the consequences if you got stuck on the other side for an extra 24-48 hours? And if you do go, make sure you equip you car properly with survival kit, shovel and ash/grit (if you have it).

Here's some info from Kirklees but this is probably not the bit you need to worry about... I think they mean "grit" and not "git" but you get the gist...

I'd use the motorways in this weather as you can be caught out on treacherous roads (speaking from experience).

IDontLikeDisciples - wouldn't worry too much, as the real snow is not expected in the South for a couple of days (Tuesday). If trains can leave the North then they will get here (given normal disruption).

Don't forget it is still only November, I still don't expect real snow until January/February at least in the South.

We have a sprinkling of snow, I live in Huddersfield near the M62.

Highways agency site is good, tells you the weather on main roads

Just starting to snow again here (towards Holmfirth)

Thanks. I hadn't really thought about the weather and how it will affect travel for me. I predict a fair few nightmares doing the Harrogate- London journey every weekend!

BellDameSansMerci Are you the lady who crashed their car in Honley last winter and then had a good old rant about Kirklees Council on here?

IDon'tLikeDisciples You travel Harrogate to London every week? With DC? Goodness....

Snake pass wasnt closed earlier but it is one of the first roads around here to get closed. Cat and the fiddle road is ok too. Most of the small back roads are fine but you need to go a little slower due to ice risk.

I guesss the weather will determine how it continues. If it helps i have put in an order for the snow to hold off until lunch time tuesday! Dont fancy a 5am start on monday in snow Hmm

BikeRunSki - I am and well remembered! They do seem to be gritting more thoroughly this year (perhaps they have more grit). I'm not going out in the snow this year!

The weather here has improved slightly - not had more snow since this morning but I think there's more forecast for tomorrow.

BelleDameSansMerci · 27/11/2010 16:55

I should check forecast before typing as it's changed.

Einstein - you have magical powers. Got a bit of snow forecast for this evening but nothing until Tuesday after then.

Thanks all - I gave it a miss, bit of a wuss about driving in snow and ice, and didn't want to risk getting stuck with 3yo.

Discretion being the better part of valour, and all that.
