Should you delay BLW until LO can sit up unaided?

DS2 is 23 weeks old. He's trying really hard to roll over onto his front at the mo, and I reckon he'll get there in the next few days, but as for sitting up, I don't think he'll be there for a while. So my question is - should I hold off BLW until he's able to sit up on his own, or just prop him up in a chair and start offering solids at 6 months?

BTW, I'd never heard about BLW until I joined MN recently, so a big thanks to Aitch and all who have provided so much info.

I don't think it matters as long as they can be propped up in a highchair. My six and a half month old can sit up on her own. I did initially put a cushion under her bum though.

I started at about 6 months and my dd couldn't quite sit unaided. I just propped her up in her high chair (we have got a tripp trapp) with a rolled up towel.

lol, well it's there somewhere... unfortunately the link doesn't take you straight there so you might have to read a few of the comments first.
a pleasure, i'm sure...

i'm not in love the wht idea of propping up, really. or bumbos, tbh, just in case you were thinking that might be the answer. i suppose i think of the whole sitting up thing as being an indicator of core strength, and maybe (who knows, i'm not a doc) that's required in a choking incident?

as i recall i fed dd sitting in my lap a bit and she couldn't sit up brilliantly in her first, really open highchair but could in an ikea antilop. in my lap i think i felt better able to deal with anything untoward. not that anything happened but you get my drift.

it's up to you in the end. dd could sit for a wee while but wasn't completely stable or anything. but she wouldn't have required propping up with cushions in her antilop. see what you think when you get there, three weeks is a long time in baby development.

Maybe I was a bit blase in my use of prop. She could pretty much support herself but the tripp trapp is a bit slippery which is why I used the towel. I wouldn't have put her in it if she had no support at all.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just wait and see what my instinct tells me when the time comes. And like you say, Aitch, 3 weeks is a long time, so I might be fretting about nothing. One thing's for sure, I'm going to be hovering round here quite a lot for encourangement as I'm quite nervous (and excited) about the whole weaning thing.
