Weaning

Advice please. Why is my baby pooing all her food out?!

I've just started my 6 month old DD on solids, and everything is going straight through her. I gave her baby rice and pear, and her poo went right up her back and looked like pear. So after a couple of days of that (and a lot of washing clothes!) I tried carrot, and her poo came out wet and orange. Is this normal? I was told solid food meant solid poo. I am definitely finding that the opposite is true! Please tell me I am not the only person to be having poo issues!

That's how it started with both my two. Remember being a bit at first but it soon settles down, guess it just takes their insides a little while to adjust!

There's nothing at all unusual in what you describe. It's normal. My ds is now 2.5 and still poos what you give him. Carrot poo is orange, chocolate poo is dark brown, and so on. And Christ, don't give her beetroot or you'll never see the end of it.

Sometimes poo is hard, but most of the time it's soft - and you can expect this for a few years yet

until they start eating more solids than liquids (ie milk) then they dont start getting solid...& they dont start looking like poo & not just a collection of bits of food until they get their molars & they start being able to properly masticate their food....until then - nappies are pure hell....i remember mourning being able to bung em into the machine with no worries when DS started solids

Thank you for this advice. I feel a lot better now that I know it is normal! Why don't the baby books or HVs tell you this sort of stuff? Thank goodness MN is here.

Well thank goodness it's normal - i was just about to ask the same question after receiving my first nappy full of the same carrot puree I had just spooned int DD's mouth. Looks like I just spread it on to the nappy!!!

rabble - I was going to mention the beetroot thing - actually quite pretty as poo goes.

It happens because the gut is still not fully mature and not able to process all of the food that they eat, so a lot of it just goes straight through.

As her gut matures, her poo will become more solid. It just takes a little while - dd was well over 3 before she started having proper, "formed" poos.

Blueberries are very alarming...

In poo, that is. I don't have a blueberry phobia or anything...

The great thing about it is that you can actually see what they have eaten. I am so proud of DD when I see that she has actually eaten some broccoli and that it hasn't all gone on the floor/under her chin.

by the way, we thought DS had worms until we made the connection between eating a banana and little brown fibre bits.

Raisins are fab - raisins go in, grapes come out

I love weaning poos! just started weaning 5 1/2 month old dd and it's great to have patty-poos in nappy and not super sloppy ones which i have to chase all the way up her back and do a full clothes change and wash (for dd, not me!)
