Weaning

sorry - another 'how much milk?' query

I'm trying to work out whether I need to be offering my 9 month old milk with solids or whether he'd be okay with just the bfs overnight. This is what a typicalish day might look like:

7am solids
8.30 bf
11.00 solids
12.30 solids
4.30pm solids
6.30pm bf
10.30pm bf
2.30am bf

He clearly wants a drink with his solids but he seems just as happy with water as with milk. Would 4 bfs in 24 hrs be enough? What if he (please, please, soon!) drops the middle of the night feed so is down to 3? He doesn't eat huge amounts at any solids meal but am pretty confident he's eating as much as he wants. I'm trying not to bf between 9 and 5.30 cos I'm going back to work in a couple of weeks, but he's usually happy with EBM or formula in a cup. He's only been eating this much solids and having this few bfs for about 3 weeks, so I'm still feeling my way. Any opinions or experiences gratefully received!

When ds was 9 months I probably gave 3 BFs (first thing in morning, last thing at night and mid afternoon after nap).

Given that your ultimate aim is to have him sleeping from 7-7 or thereabouts and therefore to drop both the 10.30pm feed and the 2.30am one, would you not consider feeding mid afternoon and maybe moving his tea a bit later? Why do you do breakfast solids before BF?

Thanks!

I won't be able to bf him mid afternoon most days because I'll be at work! But I could on the days I'm not working. And he could certainly have milk in a cup at that point.

He has solids first thing because my partner gets up with him, giving me a much needed lie-in until about 8.30! But again I suppose he could have milk in a cup, although expressing is a bit of a faff and I'd rather he didn't have loads of formula as it seems to constipate him.

Fair point about a lie in! I BF first thing, but dh goes and gets dd and takes her away while I sleep for another hour!

I think the thing I didn't understand first time round was that you can do different things some days to others, so maybe stick with the mornings as suits you, but try milk in a cup or BF if you're around mid afternoon. You never know, that 2.30am feed might start creeping earlier!
