tinned fish for baby, how to avoid too much salt and/or oil?

I'm in central Asia so there isn't the full choice of foods. There is tuna in 'its own juice', (which might mean brine), tuna in olive oil and tuna in veg oil. There are also sardines in different things, mostly oil.

I don't want to give my DS anything too salty, but at the same time do want him to try fish (he hasn't started protein yet, he's nearly 6 months, only had veg, fruit and cereal). The other possible option is buying fish fingers and scraping out the actual fish...

any hints on this? much appreciated..

what about just normal fish? like from a fish monger or is there no such thing where you are? otherwise i would go for the fish in olive oil over the one in brine. i personally get tinned tuna in springwater, but maybe they don't have that where you are.

When my DD was being weaned, I used to soak the tuna in boiling water to rid it of any excess salt.

thanks: yeah, fresh fish would be great, but we're about a million miles from the nearest sea! You can get sushi here and extremely suspect-looking fish, but it's very old and is either flown in from Dubai or comes on a train from Moscow, not really wanting to risk that! I might try the rinsing thing, maybe rinsing tuna in olive oil would be better than rinsing tuna in brine... hmm...

i fed my dd plenty of tinned fish in her time. Our fave was sardines on toast.

your fish fingers idea isn't a bad one either, tbh. it's pretty un-mucked about with food. and yes to the tuna in olive oil too.

I agree with the others that I'd go for tuna in olive oil, and I wouldn't worry about the olive oil either - babies need fats, and tuna is a fairly lean meat so it'll balance out.
