Weaning

Starting weaning again after illness....

I started weaning my 8.5 month old in January. Since then he has had 3 ear infections and been really poorly each time which has set us right back to baby rice each time...
This week (the 3rd ear infection) has been the worst...nearly hospitalised twice for dehydration....infection has caused terrible sickness and diarrhea...so he hasn't had any solids since Sunday and really has been quite ill.
Obviously my first priority is to get him better but once he is does anyone have any advice for "fast track weaning" back to where he was? Every other time we have had to re-start the weaning process from scratch.
Or am I just being an impatient minx and need to take my time to work him back up to lumpy foods and finger foods again....I just worry about doing the wrong thing by him...I'd happily puree stuff for the rest of my life but I don't think that's the best thing for him...
Any sage words of advice....?

Sorry your son has been so poorly! it is a nightmare when they are ill but it can't be rushed getting them to eat again because they will just do it when they're ready.

Is he still getting plenty of milk/water?

If i were you I would focus on those rather than his food as milk is still his main source of nutrition.

My nephew has been poorly on and off most of his first year and every time he was in hosptial etc he went right back to being on just milk... i think it's to be expected when they are that ill.

Hope he is better soon x

WBAYM, sorry to hear about your ds. I sympathise. My ds, who is just 12 months, has been ill for about a month first with a very bad fluey throat infection and then bad gastroenteritis. He's lost loads of weight and I'm desperate to start feeding him up, but his stomach is still really sensitive and if he eats too much at once he just throws it up again. I'm having to give really tiny quantities - you know, a couple of ice cubes etc. I think we both just have to be patient and take things slowly. The urge is to feed up after illness but we must resist the urge to push things too fast.

I'm sure if you offer tiny bits of finger food along side the baby rice / purees etc, he'll start wanting to eat them. I've had to make my ds's finger foods really tiny because he's forgotten how to chew and his gag reflex is really strong again.

Slowly slowly, if he's getting plenty of milk he'll be fine.

Thanks for your messages girls - I think you just told me what I already knew but needed to hear from a 3rd party!

He is still taking plenty of milk and actually has fed himself a good few bits of carrot and broccoli today so we're on the way now anyway....

Thanks xxxx

poor poppet. agree with the advice to take things slowly, but good news on the broccoli front!

Hi there, I don't know if this dicussion is still going, but have found it interesting as I have just been in the same position with my little boy (8 months). All he wanted was to bf for a week.

However when he was totally well again I gave him Weetabix (with cows milk) and homemade rice pudding (using pudding rice and cows milk). These seemed to get him back into the habit of eating again - I think cos they are easy to eat (no effort required on his part.)
