Weaning

High Calorie foods - non dairy

7 month breast fed (one breast side only because of lump surgery milk duct damage to other) ds who has always gained weight slowly is now, since 26wks being weaned.

He also has excema! and F/H of allergies so trying to avoid dairy until 9 months but veg/fruit combinations of weaning have caused him to drop another centile (born above 50thc now just below 10thc).

I know breast milk is high calorie but he likes his solids and breastfeeds tend to be quite short from his preference.

What can I give him to bump up his calories? - was pumping breastmilk and adding this to veg/fruit purees but this is difficult from the one side only.

Basically want help with high calorie least allergy causing food choices please.

How about hummous?

I was also recommended coconut oil to stir through stuff to up the calories - apparently the fats in it are very similar to breastmilk. Not sure how it will fit with your family history of allergies, though.

On an avocado theme, I stirred avocado oil through lots of ds's food to make it more calorie dense.

Aside from that, oatcakes rather than rice cakes - the basic rule for me was proteins and fats rather than carbs. And most fruit and veg are very poor in calories. I was told that although lentils etc are good sources of protein, babiesmay have some difficulty breaking them down in the very early days...

I was also encouraged to go with meat for protein from very early days - if you eat meat or fish, minced chicken or white fish might be good.

Noting down suggestions.Thanks.

Looking at link on allergic foods on Aitch's BLW site:
beans and seeds ,legumes, citrus, berries, tomato, wheat, corn, fish, egg, dairy are the foods recommended to be left until later.Feel I am being slightly obsessive if I keep to this but....

Meat and fruit/veg and oats/rice seem to be OK.But thinking in terms of what I would be eating to lose weight I would eat these.

Avocado and meat???

Hmm - adult might have chicken with avocado in a salad or sandwich... Avocado and liver sounds grim, though.

Oh - forgot dried fruits - higher calorie for weight than fresh, but can be a bit fibrous....

Morroccan sort of meat with dried fruit -

Coconut added?

Two of my ds's are smalla nd dairy free

What i always did- and got a huge thumbs up from dietician who now tells everyone to do it- is simplya dd olive oil to most of their meals. Its relatively healthy as far as fats go, but still mega calorific and supposedly good for dry skin, though I dont know if thats truth or folklore tbh
