Weaning

Portion size for a (nearly) seven month old

Hi folks. Has anyone found the recommended portion size in the Annabel Karmel book really small? I've recently tried a couple of her recipes, but I've found that it doesn't make nearly so many portions as she says of the size my DS eats. eg I just made her courgette gratin this evening - it should apparently make six portions - for my son it made two and a bit . Am I stuffing him full to busting?!

I used "another" book a lot in the first stage weaning and have used those suggested portion sizes as a guide and stuck with it. He wolfs down everything I give him, and still takes 21-25 oz of milk a day. He's not a huge baby either - just below average on the centiles - but he is VERY active.

Hi twinkle, sorry can't help because as you know we are doing BLW (as opposed to MLW )

Like you, I am astounded how much ds eats. We have a dog and I assumed she was having most of ds' food, but she wasn't there today when ds was eating and he ate heaps, there was hardly anything on the floor.

Thanks Wallace. This question actually makes me sound really anal which I'm not at all really.

Our nearly 7 month old has BM followed by baby porridge (4 table spoons), the BM at 11 ish, then 6 cubes of savoury mush followed by a fromage frais, then BM at 4 ish , then 6 cubes of savoury mushm followed by 3 cubes of apple or pear, then bedtime BF. Gosh, that sound like quite a lot!! I worry about overfeeding her but she will close her mouth when she's had enough!

Yes, that sounds very similar worzella - thanks. Like you, DS does let me know if he's ever had enough, which is pretty rare tbh.

Hi twinkle- We have 2 tbsp of porridge for breakfast and then 5-6 cubes of veg for lunch, tea is normally a organix fruit purree pot. As long as your DS is still taking his milk then he obv wants the amount of food your offering.

Hi Twinkle

I found the same as you with Annabel Karmel's books - I was also using her ice-cube trays (are you?) which are huge and it was only making half of the portions she stated in her book - did seem a bit strange that her book didn't match her ice-cube trays iyswim!!

Although (if you have had a chance to read the p-n thread), I have become lax in cooking for DS (so this is all in 'jar' speak), he is eating loads now - is having 4 tablespoons of porridge mixed with fruit puree for brekkie, half a jar of savoury plus half a jar of dessert at lunch and a full jar at tea - plus between 25-30oz of milk each day - so I don't think you are overfeeding your DS - they will stop when they don't want anymore

Ive never actually checked out the number of portions in her book. In fact sometimes I also forget to weigh the ingredients and just go with the 'oh that looks ok' line
