Is it ok to give a 7month old peanut butter?

I always assumed that I couldn't give my DS peanut butter until he was 5 (I remember reading that somewhere) but I have just got some information which says that as long as there is no history of allergy in the family (which there isn't) then smooth peanut butter is fine from 6 months old.

Am a bit surprised by this so thought I would check - it would good if I could as I often have peanut butter on toast for lunch and it would be handy if I could give my DS a bit to nibble on at the same time.

It's whole nuts they shouldn't have. If there are no allergy concerns, then yes.
I waited a buit longer as I weaned ds quite slowly, but he ate some of dd1s at 10 months and loved it!

Thanks for your replies - the information was on a promotional e-mail from Cow and Gate so, as they don't make peanut butter, I am assuming it is genuine and not just a way of selling more products and I would also assume they would have done their research - hopefully!

Age 5 is for whole nuts due to choking (what about all the other food they eat?)

If you don't have a history of allergies in the family I think its ok before a year. My two have had it before a year and had no issues

tis indeed. must change back... needed to post on a thread entitled 'i am uterly wet and a weed'...

blimey, that sounds a bit frightening. why are some people prone to clots, do they know? does taking a low dose aspirin reduce the chances? [knows nothing]

some people have a genetic predisposition to blood clots, something to do with Factor V leiden, but we are all clear of that ! took low dose aspirin for last trimester of pregnant, but going to see GP to discuss further!

have to say, actually, our doctor is excellent, just hate going with vague symptoms, like a sore leg !!

I once read that Nigella recommends giving them their first taste of peanut stuff in the doctors surgery while there fro something else, then you've got medical people on hand if something happens. What a good idea!

Now that is a good idea - or I have a friend who is a paramedic so maybe next time we are round there....
