BLW and Salt

Hiya,

I am about to embark on the BWL path in a couple of weeks time. DS is 23 weeks today and is starting to try and lick our food already. He can't pick any up yet though, just very efficiently pulled a bit of banana and nectarine towards him to lick it so that he ended up having it all over his face. But he looked so proud and had a big smile on his face

Anyway, I know it is some time off but I am wondering what you do when you are out e.g. in a café and give your lo's some of your food. Do you worry about the salt that might have been added when cooking the veg? Or am I just too concerned?

Hope I don't sound over- anxious.

When still very small, I would always carry a banana, or nip into a shop and get one. Reason being, they will nearly always eat it, and it is nearly impossible to tamper with an unpeeled banana.

I wouldn't risk veg in a cafe if I thought there was a chance of added salt.

things like salads are good, and also i used to order french fries with no salt... yes, dammit... chips! she loved them. and the banana tip is good. tbh you'll probably find that you end off with a wee tupperware filled with veggies in the beginning. at least i did.

The saltiest thing that my ds2 consumes is... wait for it...

Shreddies! 0.6g of salt per serving!
I wouldn't worry too much about veg in an occasional restaurant meal - there are scarier things in my kitchen cupboard!

And no - you're not paranoid.

Thanks for your answers, I like the veg and fruit in a tupperware and the banana.
Never thought about salt in cereals! It's a whole new world but def worth it!

God we eat chips all the time here. They are only potato and oil, what's the problem?

Report
tassis · 18/02/2007 20:21

you start ordering pancakes and scones instead of gooey cakes because they're less bad

well, exactly, colditz. potato, oil and no salt. but sometimes i used to feel like a proper Bad Mum sitting in a cafe blowing on chips for my six-month-old...

So did I that's why I didn't post "Oh fgs give him a chip"

But that's what I did, I just didn't want to own up to it.

I did carry a banana around though, still do in fact.

Tassis is right, and the trouble is, it continues indefinitely. Once they get into the habit of being able to nick anything they want from your plate, you can say bye bye to anything remotely gooey. I am sooooo sick of toasted teacakes. I want some cake!!!!

what you need aitch is one of those banana carriers from lakeland. looks like a dildo, but it holds a banana inside it.

FotheringtonTomas · 18/02/2007 20:33

i've seen the 'nana dildos in real life - they are enormous. most impressive, but not something i want to pull out of my baby bag... people already think i'm a Bad Mother cos of the chips.

Will do. I was going to take the post birth photo off after a short while, then I forgot, so I thought I may as well leave it on. Was taken about 20 mins after ds2 was born - was a very easy birth! I don't look nearly so good now - sleepless nights and a long winter have take their toll

Wallace - love the pic with the broc! Bless him - my ds2 wouldn't eat anything green till he was 3. ds1 had been great - I believed all the stuff about introducing new flavours etc, because he was a textbook baby. I was soooo smug and couldn't see how anyone had a problem with weaning.
Then along came stroppy ds2 and even though I was supposed to be an experienced mother by then I ended up tearing my hair out!
