Hi there
this is my first post and Im looking for some opinions on my 7 month baby son.
Ive got a 10 year old daughter and cant remember anything about her milk feeding other than she took it really well. My son has been a different story.....!

He eats very well and has taken to most food easily but has never been that keen on milk. He was (but grown out of it) Lactose Intolerant and had bad reflux and has never taken more than 6 ozs at any one time.In short milk feeding has been a nightmare.

For a month now - Ive been giving him follow on milk (HV advice) becasue his milk intake has dropped so much.

His routine is something like this:
8.30am - 3oz milk and cereal with 3oz milk
12 noon - lunch including a petit filous
3pm - try to give him 6oz milk, hit or miss if he takes it
5pm - dinner including a milky pudding
7.30pm - 6oz milk, again hit or miss if he will have it
10.30 - 3oz in the process of dropping 'dream feed'

He is averaging 15 oz a day but once dream feed has ended next week it will be really low. HV says i should drop mid afternoon milk but if i do that he will be lucky to get 12oz at most. He is not yet feeding himself - I keep trying him but he isnt quite ready

Sorry for long post - any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Am I overfeeding? Could he be ok on less milk if he has a couple of yogurts etc?

Thanks
Kris

It is a bit of a confusing time. My DD just went off breast milk when she started solids. I then went onto bottles thinking that would sort things out....my mistake! She only takes 6oz included in her cereal and I try to give her a feed after her pm nap but it's hit or miss. At bed time she takes maybe 4 oz. I've started giving her this feed in the semidark and she seems to take it better. The HV told me that she would be fine but it is quite frazzeling when all other babies are swigging 8 oz bottles 4 x per day!! I'm sure your wee boy will be fine on his amount. My DD is developing fine (I think) and I my wee girl is just now wanting to feed herself- 9 months so don't worry about your son - he's still little... I've now the joys of DD raspberrying out food because she wants to handle it herself. Wonder what she will eat tomorrow!!

My ds is 7 months too and doesn't feed himself yet either, so don't panic.

As for the milk, they only now need 17-20oz per day including yoghurts, cheese and milk they have in their cereal. My hv told me that one yoghurt is equivalent to 1/3 of a pint of milk. This means that he's getting quite a bit from the petit filous (mine loves these!!) You could add cheese to his food aswell if you feel he's not drinking enough milk. Then you won't have to worry at all.

Sounds like you're doing great

DOnt know much about forumula feeding but why would your hv say to give follow on? It's a marketing plaoy. The extra iron cant be absorbed. I wouldnt be dropping any milk feeds if you're worried about how much he is taking. Milk should be main food until a year.
