Anyone else about to start BLW?

My dd is 6 months on the 10th Dec and I am planning to start introducing solids by the baby led weaning approach. I was wondering if there is anyone else who is looking to start using this approach around the same time. (I might not start quite then as dd is not sitting up unaided yet so it may be a while longer before we start). Anyhow, I thought if there were other interested it might be useful if we were in touch either on this site, or elsewhere (BLW BLOG?), to offer thoughts and support. Any interest?

My dd is 6 months at the end of November. She's still exclusively bf and it's still suiting us both well at the moment. I'm interested in baby led weaning (she's already had an apple to suck on and didn't seem interested in the least btw)and am reluctant to wait until she can sit up unaided as that may be quite some time. Would really like to share hints, tips and experiences though. Have you seen this blog? babyledweaning.blogware.com/

i started a few weeks ago. dd just over 6 months. it's going really well. there are some pics of her on that blog..she's dizziebaby!

Yes I've had a look at the blog - dizziebaby is very cute!!!! It is really helpful, although I still feel it would be useful to chat with people who are ata similar stage with it. Perhaps this could be done on the blog site, or at the yahoo group on baby led weaning? I was thinking of sharing weekly "meal" plans (that sounds a bit grand actually!!). What do you think?

i think it would be a great idea. especially cos there isn't that much info out there, it's all guess work isn't it really?! i'd love to have known someone at the same stage as me, but every mum i know is doing purees so thinks i'm a bit bonkers.

DS started BLW 10 days ago and is loving it. It's so good to read of others at approx. the same stage. There are days I have a ridiculous amount of equally ridiculous questions . . . good to come somewhere I can ask them in safety.

DH said yesterday that he was delighted that I'd decided to go with BLW as it's so much easier and ds eats real food with us as a family. I was delighted with this as it now means I can browse MN for hours without him thinking I'm bonkers!!

hi mummykt - my ds is 6 months just two days before your dd and I am planning on BLW. He is not quite sitting up unaided yet either so we will see how it goes.

He did suck on a bit of a clementine the other day - his first taste of something other than milk! (he's ff btw). He seemed to really enjoy it - when he got a bit of juice out his face was a picture - it was like WTF is this??? - but he kept going back for more! I haven't investigated the yahoo group yet but we can have a support thread here too I guess?

hello there mummykt, you are welcome to come and ask questions on the blog, of course. and also i would deffo recommend the yahoo group, you can look through previous threads if you're looking for something specific. or ask a question, of course. i think there are meal plans on the yahoo thing, but i'm not sure the person kept publishing them once they started. take loads of photos, it's so cute...

Sounds like there is some interest. I had a look at the menu exchanges on the yahoo but they haven't quite got going yet so perhaps that something we could try to add to on the yahoo group as we go along with. I would find that really useful. This might sound really thick (I'm new to all this internet chat stuff!) but how do we start a support thread on this site? Do we just indivudually keep a thread watch on this discussion?
Also, I've never given dd a bottle and I'm hoping to introduce her straight to a cup - just got a couple of doidy cups to see how we go - anyone else done this? Am I being totally bonkers!

Great to hear all you out there in a similar situation to me. My lo is 6 months on 4th January so I am a bit behind everyone else but my hv suggested weaning (i'm ignoring her btw!)

I am also not introducing my lo to a bottle as he is purely bf. He has been taking small amounts for a doidy cup (and before that a sippy cup) since he was born. I do wonder if I am mad but haven't had major issues yet. My biggest concern though is other people feeding him at night with the doidy cup as he does make a mess and we only have one sleeping bag. We use lots of bibs but it still goes everywhere.

Mummykt - if everyone keeps posting onto this thread then we can use it as a support thread.

My DS will be 6 months on 20 December, but we will be away over Christmas and New Year so probably won't start weaning until January. Very much looking forward to BLW- cannot be bothered with purees at all!

to be brutally honest, mummykt, i think the reason that the menu exchanges came to naught on the yahoo site is that after a short while you will realise that you don't need them. just give the babies some veggies and fruit to start off with and after a short while, say a month, they'll be having what you are having by and large. yes, there are some tweaks workth doing to bring down the salt content of your food, but it needn't be complicated.
there are lots of recipes on the blog, and you're welcome to email me with more if you want as it's a very popular area of the site so i know people appreciate it. but as for menus... they probably won't be neccesary, as i'm sure you'll find out. BLW is by its nature a more easy-osy way of doing things...

ooooh, i mis-spelled necessary. quelle horreur.

good luck with the doidy, mummykt, i introduced dd to it too late and she just sticks her hands into it. however, she does drink rather nicely (sometimes) out of a shot glass, so you could try that too.

mummykt- my dd won't take a bottle..well she will sort of but she puts it in her mouth, then puts her hand in her mouth too and squeezes the teat with her thumb so liquid comes out (have tried water and milk with her), so she doesn't suck it anyway.... so we use a doidy cup with her when she's eating.

My LO is six months next week and we started BLW a week ago. It's all going well so far, she's very enthusiastic at giving everything a go!

The last couple of days I've given her water in a tommee tippee cup but she only figured out what to do with it today. She's never had water before (apart from bath water which she likes drinking ), so I was quite impressed, even though she just dribbled most of it straight back out again.

HI LizzieMint - sounds like things are going well! We have a tommee tippee cup too - but I thought I might try the doidy first and see how we go - thinking that the tippee would be a useful fall back if it doesn't go very well!!

Hi Aitch - I'm now intrigued to know when it was too late to introduce the doidy for your little one!

My son is 6mths on the 15 Dec and I would like to do something more like BLW, want to avoid the purees this time anyway! (I have an almost 3yr old dd that I weaned from 19wks so I feel clueless this time!)

oh, probably i gave it to her at about ten months. because she coudl see the water in it she thought i'd given her a marvellous new toy into which she could jam her fist before throwing the whole thing ten feet in the air. not a success.

i have, however, found the doidy very useful when making american recipes that use cup measurements....

Ah so that is what a cup measurement is! Very handy. DD swiped a piece of malt loaf yesterday and gummed it like a lunatic - not seen that on any first foods list! Ho hum

oooh, i love malt loaf. dd has swiped some of mine in the past and come to no harm. and the good thing about cup measurements is that it's all relative, if you use tiny cups you get a tiny cake. the doidy is good cos you can knock it flat on top and not spill.

DD can't sit up for very long on her own - about 5 seconds! But I either sit her on my knee to make sure she is sitting up straight or she sits in her bumbo. I think the issue about sitting up is just one of a number of indicators they are ready for solids and I'm not sure they have to have all the indicators - to be honest we started BLW at 5.5 moths as she started to swipe food from us so we thought that was as good an indicator as any and so far she has tried everything put in front of her. I think it is important they sit up straight to ensure they can spit food out of their mouth to prevent choking.

hello girls, not sure i'm allowed to join you as ds jumped the gun a bit and decided he was starting solids at 21 weeks by stealing from my plate

he's 5 months now and eats chunks of fruit and veg, sucks on chunks of meat, gluten free pasta and rice cakes. no spoons in sight

All welcome!I'm finding the yahoo group on BLW really useful and this is a few of us who have just started BLW.
