Have I ballsed it up?

With ds I carefully followed a weaning book, but dd (23 weeks today) looked at my banana so wistfully yesterday that I gave her some on the spur of the moment. She loved it & grabbed one from me this morning too!
We're on holiday at the moment and I'm not quite sure what to do now Hmm Do I give her baby rice, sweet potato, parsnip etc as I did ds, or should I leave it till we get home (in 2 weeks) and just eat banana's in secret Grin
All I can think is that I shouldn't have started off with something sweet... I'm sure I read that somewhere!

Offering finger food alongside usual milk feeds is fine I would say.

Better that that loads of mushed up stuff.

What sort of finger foods waffle? I didn't mush the banana up, she sucked it and sort of gummed it Grin

This time of year there are loads of soft fruits available. Strawberry, raspberry, blackberries etc. Buttered toast in soldiers also works well for early finger food, have a go at small sandwiches.

If you've fed strawberries and your son comes out in hives know that it's just a little reaction, and can still be tried again after a month or so (not necessarily an allergy).

OP you've not messed up at all! I did the same with DD2 and a bit of mango a couple of weeks ago at about the same age. Do an internet search baby led weaning or BLW and forget purees!

Can I do a mixture of both purées and BLW? I feel a bit like I don't understand BLW at all - how will dd actually eat stuff if it's not all soft?
Also, re buttered toast can she have bread this early? She's still 2 weeks off being 6 months...

Shroom she can eat everything accept for whole nuts and honey.

Check out babyledweaning.com

they eat it by picking food up, putting in mouth, chew with gums then swallow!

Try just root veg and soft fruit for a couple of weeks. Oats are kinder to gut than bread.

Hi shroom, dd2 is exactly the same age as your dd and I have done exactly the same thing! She was so interested in my banana that i let her gum it!
I don't think she actually swallowed much if it to be fair. I think I'm going to let her have a gum of things here and there and then start properly when she's 6months.

Okay thanks. Will check out the website...

Onestep will you be doing BLW? Did you do it with your dd1? I've been giving dd a bit of mushed up stuff - she had strawberry and banana today, and nectarine yesterday. I also gave her sweet potato which she loved. We're on holiday at the moment, so am going in what I can remember from weaning ds! What date was your dd2 born btw?

Hi shroom dd2 was born 29th jan. I'm going to do a mixture, so purees etc as a base but let her gum on bananas etc as she wants. I think that's what I did with dd1 (it's really hard to remember isn't it!), she's turned out a good eater with no allergies.

Ps hope you are having a lovely holiday!

Hi shroom - BLW purists say you can't do a mixture but I think it's fine to. I did just BLW with DD1 and it was brilliant. With DD2 I am doing some purees but loading the spoon and letting her feed herself.

If you do go the BLW route you might be surprised at how quickly they get the hang of it. The important thing is to be relaxed about it as they're still going to be getting most of their nutrients from breast milk or formula.

Hi onestep Smile Having a lovely holiday thanks, hence the delay in responding! I think I'll do the same with dd (who was born on 21st Jan) as it sounds quite sensible. She's been doing well with her purées but has also been gumming bananas and nectarines which she loves! What happens when a big bit breaks off though? I thought she was going to choke earlier!

Thanks fuzzy Smile So your dd must have born around the same time then?! How's the weaning going? I have been feeding dd but she's been trying to grab the spoon. Depending on where we are/what we've been doing I have let her a few times but it gets messy very fast Grin I love that she's enjoying the food though and having fun exploring. I'm pretty relaxed, just need to get my head round the BLW so will read up on it when we get back next week. I feel quite worried about her choking though, so need to be sure of what I'm doing before I let her have anything more solid than soft fruit!

Have just realised I have been thinking dd is a week younger than she actually is! Anyway, the choking really scares me too, i've just done a pediatric first aid coursr which was very good and put my mind at ease a bit.
