Just started trying my ds with baby rice ( hes 5.5 m/o) experiements seem to be showing that he likes his grub cold and so stiff you can stand teh spoon up and nearly cut with a knife and leave staright lines. mashed fruit has so far been spat straight out along with all warm and or runny rice. wondering if trying him with finger foods like cooked carrot would be sensible . He does have 2 teeth, is breast fed and will take water from a cup.
any opinions?

hi unisarah,
i think you already know the answer...
the thing to remember is that baby led weaning is as much a concept as it is a weaning method. he's showing you the way already if he's not interested in mashed stuff but prefers things with a bit of bite. is he sitting up well? that's a good sign of being ready to wean and particularly important when they're feeding themselves i think.

if you can get your head round the fact that they don't actually need to eat food at the moment and it's just for fun then that helps a lot with blw.
why don't you steam some carrot for him and see how it goes? he sounds like he's doing well already if he'll drink from a cup, took my dd ages to do that.

also, i tend to give dd some food quite separately from milk, but when i know that she's not ravenous for food, iykwim?

and i didn't use spoons at all until dd got her pincer grip (8 months-ish) but now she happily feeds herself yoghut and cottage cheese if i load up the spoon for her. i used to leave them lying around, though, and she played with them in the bath, so the world of cutlery wasn't a complete mystery to her.
good luck

um well have decided to just sort of make it up as we go as out of I think 8 trys only 2 have resulted in him swallowing noticable ammounts. So hes up at the table with me while I have breakfast and lunch and again at tea time. I'm offering him something foodish either to play with or eat/suck what ever. so at breakfast he had a spoon ( he had just had a huge milk feed) at lunch half a carrot, tea time I'll try a bit more rice. the carrot got played with bashed and genneraly put anywhere but his mouth, ho hum, the book we have just read however went staright in his mouth! arrgh, can you make book shaped food.
Hes great sitter so playing in the high chair is no problem for him. The cup thing is something we worked on before going on a rather hot trip where I had to be able to leave him with dad for a couple of hours at a time.
