I am at my wits end, my DD has started spitting every mouthful of food I put in her mouth at food times. Apart from making a mess of me/the highchair/kitchen/anyone in the vicinity, it means she's hardly eating any food. It doesn't matter what I give her, it still gets fired right back at me. She did this for a while when she was 6 months old, but I thought we were over it. Saying 'no' sternly reduces her to tears and makes no difference. Any suggestions?

I know its hard but don't show that you are upset, I was advised to give fingerfoods as my dd is going through the NO phase and refusing to eat, just put the food on the tray and leave her to get on with it

I agree - try to ignore it and not get riled ( difficult I know). Just leave food on the tray for her to eat and she'll give up spitting eventually. My younger dd went through the same phase, blowing huge rasperries when her mouth was full and spraying food everywhere, including all over me! she got bored eventually though.

Thanks guys. Finger food is a good suggestion, I'll give that a try. What finger foods are you currently giving? I've done toast, cucumber, bits of apple and banana (which gets mashed to a pulp in her hand) and apricots (also great to mash!)

cheese sticks, also I quite often cook up frozen veg and put a load on her tray which she likes, esp peas.
bread with houmous - messy but tasty and healthy too!

hi donnie, how do you make your cheese sticks? normally i'd make them with shop-bought puff pastry but i'm guessing that's not super-healthy for babies (haven't actually looked into it much, though). do you have a recipe you'd be prepared to share?
and lulatallulah, there's a list of finger foods on my blog if you want to have a look. we're doing baby led weaning but a finger food is a finger food, after all... i promise i won't try to convert you.

My DS went through exactly the same thing at the same age i ts very frustrating isn't it. And so much clearing up too! I found that it was best to ignore him when he did it & as suggested have plenty of finger foods available: cheese on toast soldiers, cucumber sticks, pasta spirals, cherry toms, peach.... He did stop after about 3 weeks & now eats well again so hope your DD does too.

aitch71 I buy them I am ashamed to say - no pastry though, just sticks of organic cheese they can munch on, Waitrose has them. If only I could cook up something with pastry!

aaah, we don't have Waitrose in Bonnie Scottaland...
