So what food can i give my 61/2 month old?

I started weaning ds (6 1/2 months) a couple of weeks ago but then he got a bug and I stopped so basically all he's ever had is a bite of pear and a bit of baby rice. I plan to make a conscious effort to start weaning him properly this week so what food can I give him now? Can he have porridge..I mean bog standard normal porridge not baby porridge or should he not have that because of the gluten? What meat can he have? I seem to have a mental block on what I gave dd so some food ideas would be great.

I used the Annabel Karmel book on Baby and Toddler weaning - def recommend it.

I know what you mean about having a blank with subsequent lo's. My dd2 is 17 weeks and although I am not intending to wean her yet I have dug out the book as I have 'forgotten' and dd1 is only 20 months! Blush

Gluten in porridge is barely there. Would not matter in a baby of this age anyway. He can have just about anything - one of the plus points of waiting to 6 mths :)

Couscous and pasta are fine, too.

Lentil soup has been popular with mine and is super smooth when whizzed.

Thats a good idea but what stock do you use, won't there be too much salt in the stock?

Kallo low-salt stock, in the blue packet. Next to none in that (and boy can you tell!). I have also used the vegan swiss bouillon stuff - not much in that either.

No stock. Unseasoned for babe and I add tamari to bigger people's portions.

Red lentils are easier on the gut than the other kinds, as they have no skins.

I started weaning DS2 at 6 months, and went straight to finger foods, and largely family foods. There are loads of threads on doing this, often calling it baby-led weaning (BLW).

Bit late on this one but here goes...

My lo had a tummy bug and I was advised to give him mashed banana and porridge once he started eating again. I made red lentil recipe from anabel karmel that said to use homemade veg stock. Seemed far too finicky so just added boiled water and it was just fine.

Cheers everyone! I'm convinced this weaning lark is harder when you start at 6 months+. I've tried him on finger foods and he'll suck a rice cake and thats about it if anything so much as nearly gets swallowed he spits it out. He also won't eat anything mashed or pureed so what do i do? I'm panicking that all the books say they need extra food from 6 months because their iron stores start to deplete but there's no way he's eating anything maybe a teaspoonful a day.
It seemed so much easier when i weaned dd at 4 months as she started off like this but food was established by 6 months if it takes ds that long he'll be 9-10 months before he's eating enough. Should i get him follow on milk to ensure he has enough iron or what?

slices of ripe avocado, banana. you should've seen hoxtonchick's dd around this age,she sucked the life out of satsuma segments and spat out the skin. she also liked paper napkins...

follow on milk bit of a con imo.

I agree but it does have more iron in i'm starting to think i've missed the window of opportunity food wise he really isn't interested even when offered before his milk. He'll be 7 months on 25th.

I'm giving my 6.5 month baby, baby porridge in morning and a veg puree followed by fruit puree in evening. So far he's liked everything except potato, and not over-keen on swede and peas. Loves all fruit. Did try offering him cucumber and carrot sticks but he hasn't got the hang of them. He doesn't like drinking water though but loves baby apple juice.

I really wouldn't lose any sleep over iron. The stores only start to deplete at 6 months and there's iron in ordinary formula. The added iron stuff can, I understand, cause constipation. Why not try a bit of weetabix? You can make it gloopy enough for him to pick up in handfuls and it's fortified with iron. Or well cooked broccoli florets that he can smear into his mouth himself.

I'm not sure about the window of opportunity for solids either - I weaned DS at 6 months (BLW so straight onto well cooked veg sticks) and he was, as you foresee for your lo, 9 months before he really took an interest. By 10, he was eating properly and now he's eating loads. It's easy to say, but try not to worry... they pick up on it.
