you put a tiny amount of water in the bottom of your pot and then the steamer inside the pot and the fruit/veg/fish/whatever in the steamer (the picture shows it collapsed for ease of storage) and you can then steam on the hob

great if you dont have much room in the kitchen for huge cumbersome steamers, and will fit any size of pot
