Is it possible to go away and not use baby jars?

Ds is almost 7 mths and on three full meals a day incl. protein, but not on our food yet. I cook everything at home. I'm not dead against baby jars but would prefer not to use them if poss. We are going away four times - 3 of them with kitchens and one without - any ideas - or do I just need to go with jars and mashed banana?

My friend always took her own food to the hotel and got them to put it in the fridge and heat it up if that helps. Where are you staying without cooking facilities?? Can youtake stuff in a coolbag?

I;m staying in a hotel, so they might put it in the fridge, but if its stuff with chicken in then it'd only last 2 or 3 days wouldn't it?

If they are short trips then there really is nothing wrong with biscuits and fruit for each meal.

I made lots of mince and kumara when we went away.

You could do virtually any fruit mushed up - mango, banana, pear - we went away for a week when DS was just a bit older than yours, and found it ok. With a kitchen it's easy, esp if there's a microwave. You could always eat out as well quite a bit, and order mash and fish, and mash it yourself. If you're worried about protein, does he eat cheese yet? Or mushed up baked beans? And avocado is great and easy too - fantastic source of all kinds of vitamins etc. If he eats the same things for a few days, it won't hurt.

DS is two now though, and I've kind of forgotten how quickly we introduced foods, so I hope I haven't suggested lots of things your DS doesn't eat yet...

also, depends how far you are going and for how long. i took some frozen stuff (transported in cool bag can travel for 4 hours i think was certainly stiull rock solid when i got there). If you can cook there i would suggest lentils, rice, couscous, pasta.

I never use jars and have been on holiday a few times with dd1 when she was a baby and am about to go away with dd2 (6.5 months) gain next week...

There are lots of fruits you can use - bananas (obviously), also mangoes, papaya, ripe raspberries and strawberries. These can either be mashed or used as finger foods. Also grated apple and pear. Avocado. Sticks of cooked broccoli, cauliflower, carrot. Sticks of cheese. Rice cakes. Bread sticks. Dried apple rings. Yoghurt. Weetabix for breakfast with or without the addition of fruit.

Also, I think you'll find that most hotels will be happy to allow you to put your food in the freezer and will also warm it up for you.

So, short answer is no need for jars.

Thanks for all your help. How long would a lentil dish keep for refrigerated? I guess its the protein I'm having most trouble with.

yes! we're going to a self-catering cottage w/a large fridge/freezer so we can take along some food of hers in the coolbag. it's not a long journey anyway.

also bringing her cloth nappies!

bt,we were travelling a lot from when ds was 2 mths.
At 6 mths plus,he lived on mashed up fruit, bread, rice or potatoes with a bit of gravy and mountains of plain yoghurt.
It was wasy.

Just to let you know that Babylicious are doing a special summer holiday delivery service. Basically you order frozen baby food from them and as long as you're holidaying within the UK and will have a freezer at your holiday destination, you can order the food in advance and they will deliver it to your holiday spot. Go to www.babylicious.co.uk
