Baby weight loss after starting solids

So I finally took the plunge and gave solids to my DS (7 1/2 months actual, 4 1/2 months corrected age as he was very prem). He is bf, and for a week now has been getting one meal a day (usually lunch) of baby rice with bm and/ or banana (haven't been very adventurous yet). He is enjoying it but not taking great amounts, which hasn't worried me because I offer him a bf not long before and not long afterwards.

But: for the first time since he was newborn he has LOST weight this week! I know most people don't weigh their LO's on a weekly basis; I do as a habit from his time in NICU. But he shouldn't be losing weight over any period, right? Have your DC lost weight after weaning? Should I stop the solids for a while? Any ideas would be great, thanks.

are you maintaining the bf? Weight does fluctuate so a one-off weight loss wouldnt be significant - how much weight are we talking about?

why not have a chat with your health visitor? mine came out to me when I was struggling with weaning and listened to all my many anxieties! she gave some good advice and we haven't looked back.
As an aside though personally I wouldn't give any more baby rice as it has no nutritional value. I would try higher calorie foods such as banana, sweet potato, avocado, etc. If hes taking what you have been giving well then hes probably ready for more variety.

Thank you both! Yes I'm maintaining bf as before, and we're only talking about a small amount if weight loss do far (25g on our baby scales) - but it seemed alarming anyway. Sadly my HV is useless and I don't really trust her judgement. When he came home from 2 months in hospital, still weeks before his due date, she went on about how tiny he was, and whether I've been feeding him regularly - fairly daft thing to say to the mother if a very premature baby...

But I will try him on avocado and other stuff next, he does seem to like banana.

Thanks again, I was probably overreacting Smile
