Lentils for 6.5 month old?

I keep reading conflicting views on feeding babies lentils. Some say they are hard to digest and not to be given to babies under 8 months, the NHS handout my hv gave me says to feed them from 6 months. I'm confused and certain I gave them to ds before 8 months with something containing Vit C to up his iron uptake.

Would it be ok to feed dd them? How would I know if she found them hard to digest?

One of my dd's favourite meals is a lentil meal I make her, with red peppers, tomatoes & sweet potato! She's been having it since about 6 and a half months (she's 8.5 months now) & I can't say I've noticed any problems. It's actually one of the only meals I know she'll eat reliably!

That actually sounds really nice Nuzzle, I may steal that one.

Hmm I may try her on them and I suppose keep an eye for tummy upsets, which I assume would be the signs she has problems with them.

In the annabel karmel book she has a lovely lentil recipe. She does say that they are hard to digest so must be combined with plenty if fresh veg x

YY to the AK recipe. Red lentils should be fine - not sure about green/puy lentil type - they seem a bit harder to digest?

My dcs all loved their Lovely Lentils (it really is quite yum lol)

Yes, it was the Anabel Karmel recipe I was talking about, it's called Lentil puree with sweet potato. I can never be bothered with skinning tomatoes, so I just use half a can of chopped toms instead.

I've made that recipe and my baby loved it from 6 months. I too can't be arsed with peeling so used chopped toms.

Thanks that's a good idea about loads of veg into lentils.

I gave some of my AK books away years ago to friends but I know I kept the baby and toddler meal one so I'll have to hunt it out for some ideas.

Love the idea of using tinned tomatoes. Funny I was looking at the side of a napolina tin last night to check the salt levels. I was such a purist with ds and have no interest - or time - in going back to skinning and deseeding tomatoes.

My daughter is vegetarian so I was keen to offer her lentils for the iron and protein benefits. She has also been eating them since she was really little. I suppose you only know if they are upsetting your child if they have tummy upsets but you could try first at lunch time so that they have time to digest?
This Red lentil and quinoa dahl is the recipe that I used when she was 7 months and she still really likes to eat it now too (although she is 2 tomorrow!)
