Hi
My baby is almost 7 months old. I have started weaning and its going really well in some ways. He loves fruit - will demolish a banana or mango, loves fruit puree. He loves yoghurt. He eats a great big breakfast of weetabix yoghurt and then a banana. He isnt keen on more savoury food though - will eat a bit of potato, finger sandwiches with chopped up meat and philly as a filling. He will eat mush out of jars but I would prefer to give him variations of my own food rather than rely on buying jars. He will refuse meat/veg combinations then get a banana out and its gone in literally 60 seconds. Is this a problem? I worry he is just getting a lot of sweet foods or should I just stick with these till he is a bit older and can chew better (no teeth yet)
Would be grateful for any suggestions of tasty savoury options. Thanks

We had the opposite problem where DS wouldn't take anything sweet like fruit or yoghurt. We mixed them with what he likes e.g grated apple in meatballs, grapes in chicken and sweet potato puree, pureed prunes in weetabix and he now eats them without adding them to anything. Maybe you could try the reverse?

Well he can chew without the teeth, he will be fine with what you eat, just watch the salt levels.

It doesn't really matter if he is refusing food at this age, all of his nutrition should be coming from the milk anyway. Babies often can be offered a food many, many times before they take a liking to it.

What I would watch out for though is offering substitutes. If he refuses something, that's fine but please don't give him something different instead. If he's refusing food, he's obviously not hungry. If you start giving something you think he'll prefer, he'll be playing you for years Smile

If he likes sweet things (my DS definitely does) you could try mashed carrot & swede.

If he'll eat mash potato then you could also try adding a tiny amount of white fish (poach it in milk, flake it and add to potato with possibly some cheese).

Another thing we did was put a few peas on the tray and they chase them around and have such a satisfied look when they manage the pincer grip to pick them up and eat them. Also works well with sweet corn.

Will he eat things like strips of meat if he holds them? Have you tried mashing your food with a fork if you want to spoon feed?

Thanks, I mash the food we eat or offer it to him whole - he does eat a little bit but much prefers yogurt and fruit or bread - at the moment he is demolishing a crumpet with cheese - I just struggle with meat - he doesnt like the taste as much. I add cheese and yogurt and hummus to chopped up meat or make potato and meat balls. Anyway thanks for the suggestions - I will just persevere.
