Weaning

Is this safe or should I reheat?

I made a spag Bol yesterday, and filled three little pots for my 8mo. Two went in the freezer, one in the fridge. Today I popped the fridge one in a cold bag with an ice pack and fed it cold to DS when we were out. I've been checking on the internet to see if this is safe, and all the advice is to reheat until piping hot. But is this just because they assume you will be eating it hot, not cold? Grateful for any advice!

I'd have heated it up, but only because I wouldn't like to eat cold bolognese so I doubt my DC would.

Sod all to do with food safety. I think the heat until piping hot (how hot is piping hot anyway) is to make sure it's thoroughly reheated, not just brought up to body temp which is a nice temperature for bacteria. Cold with an ice pack will be fine.

Cold is safe (though grim!) as it was kept chilled.

He loved his cold bolognese! But out of interest, how do you heat food when out and about? As sticking in a bowl of warm water would not be ideal food safety wise?

i pop into a cafe and have a coffee, never been anywhere where they won't reheat it for you.

places like debenhams cafes have a bottle warmer and microwave for customers

I don't take food out to reheat, my two get whatever takes my/their fancy when we're out.

Same here, I just buy them a sandwich

If at home then yes I would always reheat food until piping hot then allow to cool.

I always took finger foods or bought food.

Nothing wrong with cold spag bol! Good on your DS for not being picky. My DS eats similar when we're out, I'd rather he had something home made and cold than a salt laden sarnie or similar.

mine used to get banana and a yoghurt if out and about.

Same here ilovepowerhoop - I give yoghurt and fruit normally if we're out. Much less likely to stain (particually if you have a food-flinger like me!).

Cold spag bol is one of my LO's favs!
