7mo 'not eating enough' what can I do?

ds2 has bad reflux but since I have cut out dairy (he is bf) he has been much better but still has his off days where he will projectile vomit a huge amount.

He has been having some food since 6m but only manages the tiniest amounts-3tsps or less once a day. he has had baby rice, mashed banana, carrot puree, potato, apple puree and if he has too much he brings it all back plus all his milk too just gallons of sick Sad

I have managed to get him to keep food down if he sits in car seat for 10mins or so after eating but hv said yest he is not having enough food and advised me to take him to gp. I have tried twice to introduce a second 'mealtime' but he brings it all back up.hv said by now he should be having breakfast lunch and dinner. my other 3 dcs were at this age having a good breakfast and lunch.

I really dont know what to do?

Hi. I don't know anything about reflux so can't help you there but i can assure you my nearly 8 month old ebf dd doesn't have any solids some days! Should all be about taste and texture rather than proper meals

First, ignore HV advice about how much he "should" be having. At 7 months there's no rush at all. My daughter is a bouncing active 91st percentile 9 month old and has only just started swallowing much in the way of solids.

It's possible the food may be triggering a gag reflex and that can make them throw up, even if they're not prone to it to start with. It might work better to let baby feed himself so he's more in control of where the food goes in his mouth? Or even wait a little longer before starting in on the solids?

Might be worth going to the doc anyway for advice on weaning a refluxy baby, or to see if they think he's still on the best reflux meds (assuming he has meds).

"Under one, just for fun". They don't need to be eating any specific quantity of solids at 7mo. They are learning about taste, texture and what food is at that age; they get all their nutrition from milk until they are a year old. Ignore your health visitor and let your ds get there in his own time. Have a read of Baby Led Weaning - it's quite enlightening about how babies learn to eat.

If HV said to see GP, you should do that. You needn't be concerned about not getting much food into him, but the projectile vomiting could indicate something more serious - my sister suffered like this and had to have an operation on her guts at about 10mo.

MN wisdom will (correctly) advise you that there is no rush and that your baby is getting everything he needs from milk, but the way he is responding to food needs to be checked - trust your HV here - if your GP finds nothing amiss then you can keep trying as you are, but you need to check.

my 7 month old hardly eats anything either. unless he can pick it up himself he's not keen.

it's totally thrown me as his big brother was quite happy with spoons!

he had a few tiny spoons of cereal for breakfast, some toast at lunch time and slept through tea time.
I'm sure he'll get the hang of it sometime...

Yup gp. That's a lot of sick. Also why struggle on when something may remain undiagnosed - see the gp ASAP there's nothing to be lost

Is he gaining weight?

My prem DDs had reflux for 6-8 months and it usually looked like they had vomited up ALL of that precious expressed breastmilk but they still gained weight so they must have retained something. For DD2, the doctors recommended to give her rice water (boil rice in water and give the strained liquid) to stem the reflux. Looking back it was more like giving me something extra to do and she eventually grew out of it.

But I am with amarylis: go to the GP. You have nothing to lose.

I really sympathise - DD had reflux as a newborn and it was soul destroying; Gaviscon helped but to be honest I think she ended up just growing out of it.

How did your visit go?

GP advised to get ds weighed as he is quite little then she will see him again and decide what to do depending on how his weight is.

She also commented how pale he is and advised iron/vit drops.

I have stopped all solids for a few days as on thursday I attempted to give him some porridge and he was extremely sick, I have got to the point where I would rather he had his milk and at least kept some of that down rather than keep trying with solids and him bringing up gallons of sick.

As long as I keep off dairy myself his reflux is much improved, we do still have the occasional HUGE vomit every 2-3 days but since weaning it has become 3-4 times a day again.

I really dont know what to do, he is obviously ready for food, and has been wakingapprox 4 times in night for bf so he is hungry poor thing.

Does he gag when eating? Is it gagging the causes the vomiting?

Have you tried keeping him upright for an hour after any bf / meals?
My dd had vomiting issues with meals at 7 months and the feeding therapist advised to give her tiny amounts of ice cream to associate feeding and spoons with fun.
We started from the very beginning again so weak rice cereal, melted ice cream and in small amounts and worked from there. Kept her upright literally all the time unless asleep.
So difficult!
