going out for the day - how do I do purees?

If I'm going out for the day, do I defrost and heat the purees and then let them cool down in the pot with the lid on ready for eating at lunch or do I take them out with me still frozen in the pot and hope that there is somewhere to heat them up when I get there?

I do the former one if I am really not sure what there will be available.
If I am sure there will be a cafe with boiling water etc then I go for the second option...
where you going? Smile

Oh, no where terribly exciting - just baby bounce at the library! But I will be feeding DS just afterwards before I go shopping for veggies at the market! Many thanks! (and hopefully I'll get to go somewhere a bit more exciting for the day soon!) Grin

I would do the former in that case then. But if for instance we were going to my Mums I would do the latter. Baby bounce presumably will only be an hour max.

How old is the baby? Could you not just take a banana?

I wouldn't do the former, I don't think that works from a food hygiene point of view.

The second plan is good. Any cafe will give you a big thing of hot water to warm the purees in. (And purees can be served cold, anyway, as long as they're thawed, what difference does it make?)

(I did all this with DS1, weaned to purees at 16 weeks, no jars until we went on holiday at 8 or 9 months. Much easier to just go to finger food and not bother.)

Oh yes - banana is a brilliant idea.

nqc - that's not entirely true. most cafes will give you a jug to heat it but there are places that won't IME. But I think the former is OK if it's only for the duration of baby bounce. How long can that last?

I always did the former.

But I found that Heinz do fruit and veg in pots, not jars, and they were fab for taking out and about. You can get them in Boots, plastic tubs.

Pure fruit & veg, no rice fillers etc.

How old is your baby. You could take a banana and an avacado they mash it up when you need them, or put the purees in the pots with lids and defrost overnight in the fridge ready for the next day.

I guess, if it's only for an hour or so, the first might be ok ... I'm nervous about heating things and then cooling them ... the more time they spend between 70C and 5C, the more bacteria they can grow.

DS is 25 weeks. Think in the future will let them defrost overnight and then warm slightly or not depending on the venue and facilities available!

take a thermos of boiling water if you can't guarantee the cafe will give you some?
