Weaning

High chair - which type would you suggest?

DS is 23 wks and we're going to start weaning him soon. Sooo, we're going to have to buy a highchair (though may just start him in his bouncy chair). There are so many dif types that it's a bit daunting. Our kitchen isn't huge, but it's not tiny either. Is it better to get one with a table so that DS can use the table at other times for playing in with playdough etc (obv a bit far off!) or should we get one that just sits up to the table? Should we get one that can recline so DS can sleep in it after eating? Oooh decisions decisions! Help!

Got a 1st years one here, reclines for smaller babies and it fits on your own chairs so you can take it with you when you go to Grandparents etc, also has a tray which you can use if you want, or just ditch for the table as they get bigger! cost about £35.00 from mothercare

That sounds interesting. I had seen the svan one which is wooden and about £150 but does go up to adulthood! It;s beautiful but I'm wondering if I really need something so elaborate in practice! I don't want to be suckered by marketing into buying something that I don't really need (having spent loads a money on a first baby buggy that ended up being too much hassle!) IFSWIM!

We have the stokke tripp trapp that costs about £100 I think, and goes right to adulthood. Actually, we have two, one per child. We love them, they're beautiful and solid and really ergonomic.

We have one of these
The pic shows it in chair / table format, but if you click on "splash mat" on the accessories bit to the side you can see it in high chair mode.

No, they can't sleep in the tripp trapp, I don't think. I'm big on my kids sleeping in their beds etc, rather than in their high chairs.

They don't come with trays. In fact, official trays for them don't exist. But because DS2 was very messy, we borrowed a tray from a friend. (You can find trays for tripp trapps on ebay.)

tripp trapp is brilliant.

ds has used his for two yrs now,he's 3.5

dd sits in it aswell and she 14yrs!!!

definately worth the money.

child sits at table with rest of family,ds uses his to stand on and help with dinner at worktop.

I highly reccomend an Antilop from Ikea. It does the job perfectly. Fantastically easy to clean, light to move about. It only costs about £11. no frills no pretty bits but is wonderful!

I am an Atilop evangelist

Hi GGG - did you not miss having a tray with the tripp trapp? I think the Svan looks quite similar but comes with a tray... Anyone had a Svan and would like to share thier thoughts? Really don't want to go down the plastic chair route (although DH may have some thoughts on spending more money on DS;s chair then we spent on our own!)

FWIW - I cant see any point in a highchair a child can sleep in - mine would NEVER do that! IME that is what cots and pushchairs are for

Ah BBB - I had briefly considered the Ikea one just because it was so cheap and therefore if we decided we wanted to get something else then we wouldn't have felt that we'd wasted a load of cash. But it doesn't have a harness does it? DS is not 6 months yet and I worry that he'd just slide all over the shop! But you can buy a tray for that chair can't you?

you can buy harness in john lewis/mothercare/kiddicare £6.50, is same as comes with tripptrapp too. we've got tripptrapp, it is fab. i think (esp if you are doing baby-led weaning) that ease of cleaning is really crucial. am getting an antilop for gp visits.

We've just bought this one (our wee one is 23 weeks too) and have been really pleased with it so far high chair . I guess the main thing is to find one that will best fit into your kitchen - personally wouldn't pay the money for one with all the recline features etc as if weaning at 6 months then they're very close to being able to sit well(and maybe already) and you can always tuck a blanket or similar round them if need bit extra support.

Probably the best piece of advice i was given was to look at how many cracks and crevices a chair had that food would get stuck in ie look for the chair with the least - good wipeability etc can often get forgotten as part of the choosing equation coz busy thinking about style, comfort and other factors more to do with the "look" of a chair.

smiling can I just say what is the point of a reclinign high chair? If you want yr child to sleep right after his dinner just put him in his cot, say I.
Lots of people like the Tripp Trapp if you want to spend some cash.
I didn't, so like busybusybee we ended up for DS2 with the Ikea one that costs about £16 (if you include the tray). Yes, it doesn't fold away, but the Mamas and papas one (grr, hated it) we had before didn't fold up very well and was so annoying to clean! Wish had had the Ikea on efrom the start.
The Ikea one is cheap; easy to clean; big table (useful); table comes off so chair will go right up to the table (also useful when child is older).

smiling, when ds was really young ie 6mos we used the

first years reclining portable booster seat. It's about 25quid I think. It attaches to chair and has a tray.I agree you need one that reclines a bit at this stage because otherwise they just fall forward.

There is a review of it in the review section.

I mistakenly thought your ds was 23months not weeks!!

personally i loved the m&p prima pappa, thought it wa sgreat witht eh adjustable height so goes up to most tables and breakfast bars, comfy for little one, nicely padded, easy to clean, has a removable tray that can go in the dishwasher. only downside was hte price, but you can pick up a bargain in the freeads or local papers, ebay normally has too high postage costs.

We have the Svan and it's great! We never use the tray TBH because we just pull DS up to the table (means he has great fun chasing bits of food around the table). I find it easy to clean and the cushions clean and dry really quickly.

Sorry to be negative but just wanted to say the "safety 1st" booster chair isn't much good, my ds got stuck in it because the tray wouldn't come off, was v scary

Report
CarolinaMoon · 25/02/2006 19:04

I actually quite like the Safety First booster seat. The tray is pretty fiddly to get off admittedly. Mine lives in the car for visiting the grandparents etc, and at home ds has this but in blue gingham (not this minging print).

It folds away, it has a nice big plastic tray (highchair without a tray is a bit pointless imho), it is cheap. What more do you want?
