The Lakes or North Yorkshire?

I have the chance to spend a few days with DH and 2 dds at a nice hotel in either The Lakes (Windermere) or North Yorkshire (Gisborough) about 15 miles from Whitby. I can't decided which. I've been to the lakes a number of times before but dds haven't. I haven't been to the N.Yorkshire area. Both are about equal travelling distance from home.

Any advice, what is this area of Yorkshire like? What about Scarborough and Whitby? What will dds like best?

Guisborough is a 20-min drive from Whitby and not in itself that interesting.

However a nice hotel would be good. Whitby has lovely beaches, cute little olde world shoppes, 199 steps to ancient abbey ruins, interesting harbour, great fish and chips, nice walking on cliffs (and in North York Moors National Park, up the Esk valley). Also steam railway in Esk valley if that's yr bag.

Scarborough has similar but not as nice IMHO (but then I used to live in Whitby so am biased).

W has not much to do on rainy day but lovely on fine day. Don't know the lakes but think lots of walking and of course no beaches. If you want the seaside it has to be Whiterbee. But remember it's the North sea so sea itself is FFFF cold.

sounds nice if the weather is good.

I think i'd go to yorkshore. we live near newcastle and do both, Lakes in my opinion is ok for a couple of days if weather is fine, but miserable otherwise. Also good if you are 'out and about' people. We are 'fairweather out and about people' our kids like the fresh air & country if the weather is good, but would rather go to a 'culture free zone' on other days! Spent a week in Scarborough last year and it has both in abundance! Whitby & Robin Hoods Bay are fab. Spent a day at Flamingoland earlier in the summer and a day at Brimham Rocks (near Knaresborough) which was fab. Definitely more choice in Yorkshire

And I'm here sitting in Yorkshire begging to be taken out to the Lake District...

SHould make a note of the recommendations.

I have to admit I am a bit 'fair weather' out and about person...I don't do rain if I can help it.

Would have gone with Yorkshire but just found out we can have a suite ( hotel has swimming pool etc.) in Windermere.

I've just had a holiday in Whitby this year. Hadn't been there for 12 years, but the whole area was just as lovely as I remembered!

Whitby great for families, loads to do there and in the surrounding region. Probably better as a poor-weather choice too.
