We are off to Cornwall in a week - just wondering about having a day trip to the scilly isles. ive had a look at the fares - helicopter sounds too expensive, family sail for 88 quid day return sounds ok. is it worth it? is a day trip do-able with 3 yr old and 9 yr old? ant tips? thansk

Yes, yes yes, do it! We have done it twice in the last 10 years, once with the helicopter, once with the ship. Helicopter definitely better as far as time on the island goes, but you're right it is expensive. Not very 'green' either. It was a really special treat for us.

If I remember, going by sea lets you have 4-5 hours there, and that really is a decent length of time. The sea there is just gorgeous, clear and blue and so clean. We did it when our 3 children were 5, 3 and 1 and it was fine, then we did it again four or five years later.

To be honest, just walking around the island is well worth it, it is such a lovely place. We spent about half of the time in the sea and the rest exploring the island, with a stop-off for lunch at a lovely cliffside restaurant called Juliet's Garden or similar.

I'd love to go for a week, but it gets a bit pricey.
