Where would be a good base to explore the Brecon Beacons / Black Mountains? Thinking of going for 2 or 3 nights.

Lots of ideas here www.breconbeacons.org. Brecon itself is nice as is Hay on Wye or Abergavenny. It depends whether you want to stay in a town or be more rural.

I was there yesterday. Beautiful.

YY to Monmouth too. Or if you want to come more west I've always fancied Craig Y Nos Castle.

Llansantffraed Court Hotel is a lovely country hotel near Abergavenny. The food is great and it's very handy for exploring the Brecon Beacons.

We've just come back from house-sitting in Herefordshire and we really enjoyed the area. My husband had a 30 min or so drive to the Brecon Beacons for a day of walking. We stayed in a very pretty old village called Weobley, but we did visit Hay-on-Wye a couple of times and it's a fab place. Thursday is market day and the town is busy and interesting. The book, antique and clothes shops are excellent and the restaurants we ate in were all very nice.
