Very rare that we travel by rail: off tomorrow - is it always more expensive to buy at the station?

You're probably already on your journey by now.

Depends on the distance and what type of ticket you want. A normal return is the same price whenever you buy it (although there are a variety available at different prices, eg an off-peak return will be cheaper than a peak return) but is more expensive than advance tickets because it gives you flexibility about train times and return dates (eg outward travel on a particular day and return travel within 1 month). Advance tickets (if available on the route) are cheaper the earlier you buy them but then you're restricted to specific trains and if you happen to miss your designated train you'll need to buy another ticket.

Thanks plumps! It worked well - it was ds going and to buy online meant seemed that he would have to take my card with him to collect his ticket, so I didn't want that.

Price was the same on the day for a normal ticket, as you say - and good value for a youngster. Will be sending him off again now that it works so well!
