Hi there,

Wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere in Devon or Cornwall for self-catering? We're travelling from the NW so would ideally like to avoid driving to the very very end of Cornwall, a bit closer would be nice.

Looking for s/c but doesn't have to be posh so caravan/chalet/cottage would be fine. Going end September-ish.

Would ideally like to be near beach, and within striking distance of nice villages, tearooms, activities etc. We have a 3 yr old and it will just be the three of us going.

I've done lots of googling and spotted somewhere near Tintagel, and was also thinking of Croyde in Devon, where I had been as a child, but we don't really know Devon or Cornwall at all so don't know where is nice.

Basically looking for a British bucket and spade holiday with nice quaint things and a bit of stuff to visit/do.

As I said, I've done lots of web research, but am always keen on real recommendations.

Thanks
D

We really love the South coast of Cornwall. you avoid the A30 queues by using the a38 about half an hour from Plymouth. Looe, Polperro, Fowey are all lovely places to visit as well. we stay here as it has a pool and animals which when my DC's were little they absolutely loved and now they are reluctant to stay anywhere else due to the happy memories.

We went to a place called Bassets Acre in Portreath, Cornwall. It was about 4 years ago before we had kids but would definitely go back with dd and doesn't look like it has changed. Apartments with lovely gardens to explore, bbq and play in and an outdoor pool with a dome over it so usable most days. Walking distance to beach, pubs, bakery, Chinese takeaway; chippy and shop if all still there! Easy drive to plenty of other villages and beaches including the beautiful St Ives. Newquay zoo day trip distance away.

Ladram Bay 20 mins from Exeter is great. Lots to do with a 3yo incl Bicton Gardens (great play area), Pecorama (gardens and trains) and Crealy

Have stayed in some Forestry Commission cabins before at Deer Park, Cornwall. Not too far to Looe and there is a Monkey World nearby. Lovely quiet location. There are also some great chalets at Branscombe in Devon which is very picturesque and they are right on a pebble beach.

I would definitely recommend croyde in north Devon. Stay at ruda holiday park, it's right on the beach and quite a wide choice of accommodation. We too are from the north west and go nearly every year. It's only about a four hour drive.

Thanks for recommendations, off to do some research of all these places. We tend to go to North Wales quite often as it's so close, so we're very familiar with a lot of places there, so looking at somewhere totally new is exciting!
