Lots of lovely places in perthshire, and lots to do - wee towns like Crieff and Pitlochry are both nice and have choices of hydro hotels, bnbs or self catering cottages round about. Crieff hydro is particularly good for kids, lots of activities, and nice restaurant - it's not cheap but you often get good deals on the website!

Would definitely second Crieff Hydro or for self catering Aberfeldy Cottages ( Perthshire) would be a good choice.
St Andrews is lovely too.

Dumfries and Galloway is very pretty and has lots of interesting places to visit. Most people go up to the highlands or the west coast and overlook D & G, but it is well worth a visit.

What sort of holiday are you looking for? I agree with all the other suggestions but also recommend Edinburgh - National Museum, Zoo, Royal Mile; Glasgow for Kelvingrove, RIverside (transport museum), Science Centre; Loch Lomond area excellent for outdoors activities, scenery and good/easy access to cities; Stirling and Inverary Castles are my favourites.

Isle of Mull. Loads to do, lots of brilliant wildlife, kayaking, walking, theatre, castles. Children love it. When are you going?

Edinburgh as a city base, followed by Loch Tay for outdoor pursuits.

We had a really shitty time at Crieff Hydro.

Oh what happened at Crieff Hydro? We've always had good times there but sure that isn't always the case ...

If you're looking for plenty to do within easy reach of Loch Lomond then Glasgow would be a good base. You can drive to Loch Lomond from Glasgow in about 30-40 mins and only an hour by car to Edinburgh from Glasgow (less on the train), so could still do the zoo etc if you wanted to. Also only ever about a half hour drive to the coast.
If DCs like interactive then the Science Centre, Kelvingrove, Transport Museum would be enjoyable. Loads of parks, good restaurants, shopping and cinemas. West end of Glasgow is also nice around University, Byres Road, Ashton Lane with lots of independent shops. There's also a fairly new chocolate factory where you can make your own. About 10 mins on the motorway from the City Centre would take you to Xscape an indoor multi leisure and restaurant venue with massive indoor ski slope, bowling, cinema etc.
Can you tell that I'm a city dweller? Grin
Enjoy whatever you choose. Smile

The isle of Arran every time! We live in Scotland but have been there on holiday several times. Tons to do, and would recommend this book which is is aimed at children to plan their holiday.

We stayed last year in Argyle not far from Loch Lomond and Glasgow. It was beautiful. A small caravan park, not much in the way of facilities but a river running through and a loch and hills minutes walk away. And plenty of green space for the kids to run and play. We stayed in a lodge, very comfortable. Loved it and would go back in flash though we were very lucky with amazing weather. Also love Millport, a little island just mins off the west coast which is lovely with young kids - you also have Arran and Bute etc nearby and Glagow

Edinburgh rather than Glasgow. Went to Glasgow recently. If you like shopping, it's fine but really not as much going on.

Go to Loch Lomand and keep driving... Up to the highlands and islands. The most beautiful parts of Scotland. Glen Coe, Fort William, Loch Awe, Fort Augustus, Isle of Skye, Ardnamurchin peninsular, Loch Ness.
