about £20 per week is cost of keep.

Offer to pay for shoeing... about £60 every 6 weeks, or if no shoes buy the feed or rugs or vacinations or wormers.. all adds up.

easier just to offer a certain amount every week.

Riders insurance is also a good idea to cover you and kids incase you cause injury.

Rider insurance is cheap and convenient, but, a few years ago, our pony was in an incident at a show, which resulted in someone wanting to claim from is. Dd had rider insurance. When we looked into it, we were told that you can't make a claim for public liability against a child. The claim would have to be made against the parent. Which confused me slightly! Why insure your child then? I would say, insure the horse instead. That way all 3 kids are covered for riding it, you get public liability, vets cover which you could well need if the horse was injured when you were using it, an death cover so if you were in an accident, the owner would get the price of her horse back if it died. We always used a company called E&L, but have recently found out that our vet calls them Excuses & Lies which doesn't sound good!

We're insured with NFU Mutual, who are really good (recommended by our vet)Also, if the kids join the Pony Club they have public liability insurance.

Saggy - DH works in insurance, and E&L are widely known in the same way as your vet describes in the industry. NFU are known as wanting to help their customers on the other hand

CMOT what does your DH say about insuring kids? I was really worried when I was told about not being able to claim PL against a child. At the time we only had rider insurance. Turned out okay but was not a good time.

He says that as the responsible adult for the children, you need the PL insurance as children can't be held liable

Which does make sense, so why sell pl with kids insurance!!
I ditched the rider insurance anyway. Have bhs membership which covers all my horses for PL.

Well I don't know what Cmot's husband would say, hewould be the best advisor, but after my experience I wouldn't bother with rider INS for kids. I'm pretty sure cash if my kids got maimed wouldn't be top of my priorities. Public liability is much more important, and probably vets bills next. I'd insure the horse. You get PL then, vets, tack cover and you are covered for any rider. Also if it's a loan and anything awful happened to it you have death cover so owner would get the horses value back.

pet plan also do rider insurance.

Have also heard bad things about E&L.

..and horse should probably already be insured for its illness and injuries, rider insurance is to cover you in case of an accident to horse or a 3rd party whilst horse is under your control.

But isn't the first covered by the veterinary cover on the horse an the second by the public liability?
