Lumpy Horse

Dhorse, a thin skinned TB has twice come up in lumps this summer. The first time was about 6 weeks ago - he'd been wearing his fly rug and it had been hot then wet and he'd rolled - the second was yesterday - definitely not hot, but wet and he'd rolled. Anyhow the lumps today are mostly on one side (I can't remember which side they were on before), in varying sizes from small finger nail to palm of hand and are raised, smooth and quite hard. He doesn't move away if I touch or press them and he seems completely unbothered by them. If they are like the last lot they will be gone by tonight.

Any ideas what it could be? I was entertaining thoughts of being allergic to the mud, he's very thorough when he rolls (!), but he's rolled loads of times and nothing comes up. He's not getting any hard feed, he hasn't moved fields, there's nothing new growing and although the horseflies are about it doesn't look like insect bites.

Could have disturbed an ant nest, we had similar last year and we think it was ants as there was a nest where he rolls

Big horse came up in similar lumps not that long ago , which we put down to an allergic action to midges , which we are plagued with at the moment . Then small pony came in with half her neck swollen up really hot and hard to the touch , with two puncture marks side by side and bloody . We think she got bitten by an adder . Still keeping an eye on that one .

I'd think it is probably a reaction to fly bites. My friends TB came out with similar sounding lumps last year. It looked horrible, but didn't really seem to bother him, and was gone in a few days. The flies do seem to be particularly bad this year.

There are no new lumps but the old ones are still there, and about the same size. I'll give them until Friday and then if there's no change will ring the vet I think. He was biting at the ones on his side this morning, poor chap, but I'm hoping with the slightly cooler weather they are less itchy.

Urticaria or nettle rash... Can be an allergic reaction or insects. Sometimes needs a shot of cortisone from the vet to settle it down.
