Getting back into horses - have just loaned a pony WAVTB

Not sure if that acronym exists or not!! With A View To Buy, I meant.

Anyway, after a very horsey childhood (own ponies, pony club, all that jazz) I gave up when I went to Uni. Ten years later (eeeek!) and I've taken the plunge and got a pony on loan at a nearby yard, with a view to buying. A trial really. It all just sort of fell into place.

He's mine as of Monday. I've been thinking and I'd like to do some competing with him eventually. Nothing special, just to have an aim and purpose more than anything. Could anybody recommend some ideas?? Any field, though bear in mind that I can be a bit nervous! I've been out of the game for so long I don't have a clue where to start!

I live in Canada so I'm not sure if this will be applicable or not but does your barn have schooling shows? Sort of a low-key horse show for newbies and lesson kids? Maybe try entering a class on the flat, just to get used to the ring again?

In the UK there are endless opportunities to compete depending on your interests. In general unaffiliated is the place to start as it is cheaper and the level is generally more suitable to newcomers.

What interests you? Your options range from clear round show jumping, showing, dressage or if you want to do more hunter trials and fun rides may be an option. Check out the websites of the large show centers round you for details of dates. Have you got transport? That is usually quite a big expense.

Perhaps you could find out if there is a local riding club? It would be a good way of trying different things to see what you like, as well as finding out what is going on in your area.
