Have read loads of great stuff about turmeric for arthritis and laminitis. Anyone already in the know?

I know someone who is using it, I can't see it doing much for her pony's laminitis tbh but then he is still obese so fighting a losing battle! My sister thought about trying it for her arthritic veteran but she mentioned it at work and was advised against it (she works for a large veterinary hospital with about 10 smaller branches). She did tell me more details as to why but I'm afraid I can't really remember what she said Blush. I'll ask her when she comes back from her holiday!

I tried it for my boy. He became Mr Spooky on it. Took him off and he calmed back down. Tried it again and he was spooky once more. I was advised that it needs to be made into a paste with pepper and oil for it to work effectively.

Yes I have read that you have to use cracked black pepper (freshly ground) and linseed or flax oil .

Have also read reports of increased giddiness. But as my mare is not ridden that is not an issue.

Would be interested to know your sister's views Pixel.

Everyone on my yard is obsessed with it and claim that it cures just about anything. I have disregarded it tbh - if it were that great would my (excellent) vet not suggest we try it? Are there any clinical trials that have been published? Im not being rude.....just genuinly want to know. I would love to reduce the bute my old lad lives on.

Usually one a day, but up to 3 if he is really struggling, and two a day in a harsh winter. He has arthiritis and cushings and is on constant laminitis watch.

Having said that, this might be his last summer, if he continuues struggling to get up in the field. I dont want him going through another winter like that. Its a terrible fear that I will find him down in the mud.

I'm feeding it to our Shetland companion who suffers from sweet itch.

I can't be sure whether it's that or neem oil (which I cover him in all the time), but his sweet itch is much better this year, despite moving to a very midgy area.

There is a Turmeric Users Group on Facebook. They'll tell you all you need to know.

I had my 24 year old on it. Then read it exacerbates itching. As he's been especially itchy this year I have taken him off it. The itching does seem to have subsided, but it is also not as hot as it was. Who knows? The FB page is interesting, but they do seem to think it will cure everything, and there's not scientific basis for it. I'm always a bit suspicious of something so wondrous! Hmm
