I know this has been asked a lot, but I want current experiences.....We are about to buy our first family pony, I want to have a couple of insurance companies to look to for quotes........
We will probably look to have a higher excess, as happy to pay run of the mill vet bills, but want pony insured if something big goes wrong.

I'm with Shearwater. Had to claim last year and they were excellent, very helpful with my constant queries on the phone (had never claimed on insurance before) and paid up promptly.

NFU Mutual are excellent. Avoid E & L like the plague. I've heard good things about SEIB as well.

I moved to SEIB from NFU as the difference in quotes was massive - £200 (and this is a recurring theme with NFU - lorry insurance was £400 cheaper with SEIB, house insurance moved from NFU £370 to John Lewis £90). I have claimed and claimed from SEIB and they have been brilliant - prompt, efficient and never yet queried anything.

E&L - excuses and lies

am shopping around, was happy with petplan equine but never claimed and apparently they wriggle out of paying for colic surgery if you don't follow their approved worming regime (this could be a load of shit, heard it about 3rd or 4th hand but looking for other quotes anyway) whether is caused by parasitic infestation or not

NFU, also Scottish Equestrian (think they may be called something else now) x

Stone ways insurance - based in Guildford , been with them for nearly 30 years , and they've never ever quibbled any claim . And paid out within 7 days of the claim or they pay you interest . E and L are shockers . I know of one friend who they would only insure one leg below the knee , and when my old livery yard got burgled ( bearing in mind the thieves got into an individually key coded automatic locking tack room with bars in wall and floor , by cutting through the roof with an oxyacetylene torch) e and L were the only company who refused to pay out .

I have been with NFU, SEIB and KBIS. NFU is def the best with regards to cover and paying out, but the other two I mentioned aren't too far behind them.
E&L - as everyone else says, stay away!
