So sad to hear of his death - a true legend, genius and wonderful man. I never met him, but was always so impressed by his manner.

I too was always impressed by his quiet and unassuming manner and his perfect handling of Frankel. A very sad day for racing.

Had hoped there would be a thread about this.

A real trooper. Loved his horses. RIP.

Really Sad to hear the news of his passing.

I would have liked to have seen more about his passing on normal TV as his amazing accomplishments deserved the recognition of the wider public. He was an absolute legend of horseracing and a real gentleman. I have met him and he was as mannerly and impressive as he appeared to be - it wasn't an act. He would always take time to talk to DH at the races or the sales and was amusing and friendly. He will be sorely missed by the racing world and by anyone who knew him. It's very sad and I hope we can have a minute's silence in respect on the first day of Royal Ascot next week. It won't be the same without him.

Very sad news indeed. He sent my grandfather a telegram in 1965 to congratulate him on winning a Group 1 race. Came across it last week.

Racing is struggling and with such a loss which be very hard for the community.

Wonderful words from Alistair Down in today's Racing Post.

Spent a lot of time with him during his various overseas trips and once accompanied his wife to LA when he was too poorly to go.

A lovely man who was great with people and brilliant with horses. He had a natural affinity with them. Such a loss to racing and to life.

I'm really going to miss him - hasn't really sunk home yet.
