To stop me spending 7k on a pony - can you criticise my WANTED ad please?

Thought I might put this on the PC website:
14.2 WANTED!
Sadly x is outgrowing her current pony and we now are looking for the next step up.
We are looking for a kind, honest, forward-going pony that will jump round a 1m course with enthusiasm and skill, be keen and bold XC (but with brakes), hack out well, alone or in company and is 110% bombproof in traffic, including farm traffic. Pony must also be a sensible, keen hunter and have the ability to do a nice dressage test. Any pony we buy must have a proven PC record and have attended Junior or Senior camp. X does her pony almost completely by herself so they must be good mannered and easy to do. No kickers, biters, bolters, rearers or buckers. Our ponies live out with field shelter at the moment - and for this reason I am slightly biased against greys! - but a stable is planned this year. Any pony we buy could potentially be with us for life as we have two smaller children waiting in the wings. We are happy to wait until the end of the hunting season for the right pony and we have a realistic budget.

I want to say nothing under 10 but not sure what you think about that...

Does it have to be 14.2hh? Can't you specify a range?

14hh sounds too small and I don't want over 14.2 because of pony classes.

I probably wouldn't mention "biased against greys" unless you definitely don't one (which is fine).

I wouldn't say under 10. You may find the perfect pony from 5 to 10!

You want to give yourself the widest selection so you can narrow down after discussions and before viewing.

It is worth saying your daughter's age as this may be a hint so avoid unsuitable ones.

Are you OK with mares and geldings?

Sadly x is outgrowing her current pony and we now are now looking for the step up. We are looking for a kind, honest, forward-going pony that willj ump round a 1m course with ease, be keen, safe and bold XC hack out well, alone or in company 110% in traffic, including farm traffic. I can't delete your final sentace about the 10 year old so sorry for leaving that at the end lol!! I wouldn't specify and age. You can get some very good 8 year olds for exams. Ive removed your colour preference and living conditions as I think that's something which can be overcome. Most horses prefer being out. And I think you'd want to avoid anything with laminitis. I've also removed the bit about your daughter doing it alone. She's 13 and while that may be the case, there's so need to advertise it. I'm sure you will be offering a level of support to her.

Oh I do help her but she goes every morning before school to do them on her own. To be honest her current pony is a sod on the ground Hmm so I can't imagine anything that was kind and friendly could be worse! One of my ponies is laminitic and its a PITA so I definitely dont want another one. Also no sweet itch!

I think youll find something. I always find with adverts you're better sounding positive! People will be more likely to approach you. You can say no to anything!!

Good point horseylady thank you

dont mention being biased against greys even if you absolutely dont want one - you can always ignore replies to the adverts if its that much of a deal breaker for you (i wouldnt choose one either for myself, but im not looking for the perfect pony and so i can afford to be a little fussier on some aspects) - but i probably wouldnt answer a wanted advert that said no greys even if the pony i was selling was bay with no socks! I also wouldnt say no ponies under ten, i know quite a few good pc ponies around the 7-9 years mark

You might have to accept a grey. Reading your ad I'd imagine a nice connemara would suit you (very popular in PC!) and they are very often grey!

Thanks! the no greys bit is silly because the two ponies I have seen and liked were both grey connemara or connie x Grin

I have 2 coloureds, they live out rugged from head to tail, people always think they must live in, you could easily do the same with a grey Wink: Wink

I would not mention colour or age if I were you. You are already asking for a proven PC record so you should be able to have a good idea of what you're getting into and clearly something that fits the bill should be at least 6 years old. I ended up with a grey rising 6 year old when I was looking for a 14.2 for my 11 year old daughter (totally NOT what I had in mind at all). I looked at his face and just KNEW he'd look after my daughter, and he has turned out to be the best pony we could ever have asked for.

What are you budgeting for this pony, you are describing a PC "saint", I would guess that will set you back about £5k...

I have no idea whereabouts in the country you are, but there is an absolutely super sounding 14.1 gelding on www.nfed.co.uk. (where I found our perfect grey pony) Ad number 86409. Pony is based in Somerset and £3,500.00, he seems to tick all your boxes? Oh, and he's 8 years old and chestnut!

I've seen him and discounted. Reading between the lines he doesn't SJ well and is probably more of a kickalong. Also sounds nervous in traffic - our current NF certainly doesn't need to move into a driveway to go past high sided vehicles. And he's been loaned out a lot which IME never produces a very confident happy pony. Thanks though :-)
