Hi
We are taking a part loan of a horse for dd (12) and need recommendations for personal liability insurance. We've been advised to join the pony club as the membership includes 3rd party insurance. The horse is already insured and will still be ridden by the owner part of the week. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

Pony club or BHS do liability insurance as part of the membership. Pony club might be best as there are lots of other benefits for your dd to join

Thanks elastamum, I think pony club looks the best option. As far as I can work out, the insurance doesn't cover personal injury. Any recommendations for this? Thanks again.

BHS gold membership. You get a free legal advice helpline too. Just remember this, you cannot claim public liability against a minor. The claim passes to the responsible adult. (I found this out to my detriment) BHS membership in your name covers any equine you own, ride, handle or work with or are responsible for.

Thanks Saggy. So bhs gold in my name, even if I've never ridden the horse? Does this cover dd for personal injury? Sorry for all these questions!(non horsey mum with horse mad daughter) :)

I don't think you get personal injury, you would probably need rider insurance for that. We don't bother. We used to have cover with E & L, but have discovered that E & L stands for excuses and lies! We only have public liability. Even the beasts arent insured, they are worth bugger all, and being natives are fairly hardy. We have a credit card for emergencies.

I have BHS Gold membership as it covers all the horses you own so DD's is covered under my insurance. We don't have any personal accident cover.

I agree with Saggy re E&L - avoid them like the plague! SEIB are a great insurance company, paid out very quickly when my horse had an injury (no longer with them as pony is laminitic and can't get it covered so now with BHS)

We do exactly the same as Saggy, BHS for public liability and CC for any major emergencies. I do also have a little "vet fund" which I pay into monthly for routine jabs/minor illnesses.
