Rubbed bare patches,any ideas?

New horse is clipped, kind of a blanket clip... ish... well he came with it anyway Grin

The problem is that he is rubbing through, he has bare patches from his rug (we got him a new one thinking the old one was a bad fit, this one is great but it still happens) but also bare patches from his reins on his neck and on his chest from his martingale! These have only appeared in the last two weeks but are getting steadily worse!

First off we wanted to show this summer and I am worried it will not grow through properly but secondly I am concerned that he will rub through to skin and end up really sore Sad

So do any of you have any fantastic ideas that will cure this? He won't wear a hood sadly although I haven't tried a bib yet, maybe that is worth a go?

Can you get fleece sleeves for martingales? What about reins - or would that be too silly? Grin

The stud manager that I used to work for, used to swear by coconut oil. It is really thick and comes in a pot from the chemist.
Global Herbs do several supplements to promote hair growth.
If you think that fleece covers on reins and martingale would work, forget looking silly and go for it. You only need the fleece on the Parts of the reins that touch the neck so they won't impede your grip.
It may also be worth getting your vet to give the horses skin the once over. There could be underlying reasons for the hairloss which needs attention.

Thanks Saggy, vet is out tomorrow so he will have a quick look then.

Coconut oil for hair growth? He also arrived covered in bites from the bullies other horses in his old field so I was also going to ask about a way to try and help those grow through well. Do you think coconut oil would help them too?

My concern about fleece on the reins is that this is dds horse, I am not sure she would cope well with new (slighty more to ride) horse and silly fleece things coming loose and getting in the way! (mind you, being a teen she may not cope with looking silly either Wink).

I will cobble something together for the martingale though, thinking about it I may have seen something like that before... goodness knows where though!

We have reflective covers for our reins, they have ties to keep them at the bit end of the reins. I know this might be a bit of an odd suggestion, but how about tights for covering the bits that rub. They are silky and should slip/slide over the sore bits. Ive never tried, but its just popped into my head, and I suppose it might just work!
My old boss was a welsh A producer, and she swore by coconut oil.

Coconut oil is amazing. I used to look after a horse with 'irritable' skin and used to rub tha into his coat (also used it on my hair before my wedding Grin) Also, adding oil to the feed can help with skin conditions.

Both my horses get slight bald patches from their rugs, but both are thin skinned TB's, so a little bit of hair loss is not unexpected.

Megatek is brilliant for rubbed patches on manes and shoulders, expensive but lasts for ages. Don't think you'll find a showing yard without some.

dd's Arab gets bad rubs. She has sheepskin covers on any strap that touches her (we take them off for showing.

And I've sewn bits of memory foam into her rugs where they touch and rub - particularly over the withers.

She's had JointFlex in her feed for the past 6 months and is seems to have helped her coat as well as her creaky old lady joints!
