A couple of years ago we were having some trouble with the neighbouring farm burning stable waste at the part of their land that backs on to the bottom of our garden. I spoke to the farm owners who were very hostile so got the local environmental health officer involved. (Sorry if this sounds extreme but the fires would last for days and I didn't want my 2 DC breathing in these fumes). The neighbours are now back to their burning activities (36 hours so far and counting).

I know nothing about keeping horses but am hoping someone can let me know what the correct routes are for removing stable waste? I can't believe this is the normal way of doing it, or is it? I will be contacting environmental health again but wanted more info on this before I do.
Thank You

I have owned horses for 25+ years and have NEVER burnt the manure. WE pick a place out of the way for a muck heap and chuck it all there, it then just rots down, we also have a local allotment association who collects a couple of full loads once or twice a year.

I don't think they should be burning it and most definitely not if in close proximity to others.

The only person I know who burns stuff like manure is a complete arsehole who burns loads of plastic and other toxic nasties too. Stables don't burn muck heaps - it is something that I don't think I have ever seen tbh.

Get on to Environmental Health again, and take photo's and note down times and dates too. Hope you get a good result.

Thank you for getting back to me, I didn't think it was right but wanted to be absolutely sure. I phoned environmental health this am and couldn't be more impressed with their service - they visited the farm and told them to extinguish the fire this aft - I noticed the air was much clearer when we got back from the school run and have just opened an email from env health confirming their visit. Thanks for the advice.

Don't know about farms but this does sound strange. All yards I've known - including our own - just have muck heaps which eventually rot down.

Newmarket racing yards have to have their muck heaps taken away once a week and there are specialist companies who do this. Environment agency very hot on this as they don't want to encourage rats etc into neibouring homes.

Speak to E H and I'm sure they will be on to this.
