Does anybody use borax?

Hi I so need to get hold of some borax and I understand it is used on horses hooves. I am looking in the East London/Essex area but haven't found any yet.

It is available online but they are charging the earth for it.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Ta.

Have only ever put glitter on my horses' hooves, or pig oil, but bumping for you anyway. Interesting what you find in unanswered messages.

Looks like the end of the road for the traditional ways. If we didn't put it on chips then vinegar would soon disappear. It is all spray cans where we do not know what the hell is inside but has a picture of where we can clean with it.

What do you want it for? Perhaps there is another old fashioned remedy you could use. For instance if you need it for thrush then we always used to use stockholm tar (assuming you can still buy that of course!).

I am using it for ringworm and fleas. I have just got a new kitten from a shelter, who gave me this lovely present.

Borax is very good for putting into the carpet, it kills the spores as well as flea larvae and eggs. You can also put it into the washing and it doesn't affect the colours. The only other thing to use is bleach which is rather harsh.

I tried over at the cat forum but they seem to think that ringworm wasn't a big deal.

I'd certainly say it was a big deal. My cat came from a rescue place and I almost didn't get him because after I'd picked him out (all right, he'd picked me), the whole litter got ringworm and I wasn't allowed to bring him home. They were very poorly for weeks and a couple of the kittens died. Sad

Sorry that last post makes it sound as if I changed my mind about having him because he had ringworm. In fact because the kittens were ill for so long and the shelter knew I had excited dcs at home they offered me another kitten that had been in a different foster home but we decided to wait for our boy. Not much help with finding your borax though. Blush

Sorry to hear about your troubles there. Your cat shelter sounds responsible. I went back to my one tell them and they sounded like they couldn't care less. Strange as they had some pedigree persians that they put out to stud.

Oh and if you want borax you will have to get it from the net as the EU has banned the sale of it and only allow borax substitute. An old fashioned hardware store told me with some alacrity.
