Question re pay scale

Have been a deputy head for 11 years (L5) and prior to that was one year away from threshold (it had just been introduced the year before I got deputy head job). Left my deputy head job in December and have secured a maternity leave cover post as a class teacher for 1 year beginning in September. My contract states I will be on Upper pay scale 1 ( head thought it would be U3 but having contacted LEA HR dept has changed it to U1). Is this correct!?

I don't think that is right. I think you should be on UPS 3.

Any ideas why HR have said UPS 1?

Don't know. It happened to my husband. There are paragraphs about it in the STPCD but I can't remember what they are.

If you haven't gone through threshold, surely it should be M6 or U1.

Spoke to union and they said that U1 is being very fair and generous.

Like EvilTwins, I'd have thought that you would still have had to go through the Threshold, even though you have been a DHT, so would therefore still be on main scale.

Try and get moved onto UPS 2 or 3 as soon as you can as I gather it is going to be much harder from next year. Also bear in mind that when you move jobs again, your new school will no longer have to honour your existing pay scale, thanks to new pay reforms. Good luck with your new job!

My understanding is that if you have been a deputy head then you do not need to go through threshold.

I was deputy head for 4 years (I think), starting just about the time that I would have gone through threshold. When I returned to teaching without additional responsibility, I was put straight on to UPS 2.
