She was about 12 and we have had her for seven years. She had been ill and on medication so I knew the time was near. She was a 5lb tabby and very timid with strangers but was beautiful, loving and gentle. She would sit under the plum tree while birds hopped about her and didn't even have a notion about hunting and stalking them.

Yesterday I had the morning off work and we spent an hour together on the bed just cuddling and she did what she always did which was to prod my face with her paw when I stopped and she wanted more.

We went downstairs and she just suddenly fell ill. I got her to the vets and he agreed it was 'time'. I was in bits but it tipped me over the edge with how upset he was after knowing her for so long.

I took her home and he came out three hours later and she was put to sleep on her favourite blanket with DH and I next to her.

She is buried under the plum tree and I have packed up her beds, bowls etc.

The house feels still and empty and my heart is broken. I cannot believe how much I loved that little scrap. Beautiful, gentle, loving girl.

I miss you.

I'm so sorry, redruby. It's very tough to deal with. You did the right and living thing though.

My tabby girl was pts three weeks ago today.

The grief has been overwhelming and a rollercoaster. Little things remind me of her. The house still has that sweet smell.

She was such a beautiful soul. Loving, funny, loud!

Gradually I'm remembering the good times we had. In time, you will too.

Sorry for the loss of your lovely cat.

Thanks everyone. She was my little shadow, where ever I went in the house or garden she was beside me. I couldn't even pee in peace sometimes...........

I will even miss her sitting on top of my bladder and purring loudly at five o'clock in the morning. Smile

The look on my DH's face as he buried her was awful.

Mine would lie on the pillow. One time I thought my ear was bleeding. Turns out she had been dribbling in it!

Please tell me about your cats and the funny things they do/did.

It is really helping me at the moment and making me smile.

My own furry stalker. Without the restraining order.

She and our other cat would go down the road and sniff under the door of a dog they didn't like.

Kind of taunting him, knowing he was safely locked inside.

My cat was a rubbish cat :o

She got stuck, fell off things, couldn't climb trees, you name it she couldn't do it.

She frequently rolled off the back of the sofa and fell on your head

So sorry about your lovely girl. I have one that sounds almost exactly like your sweet kitty. My old girl is very shy around strangers. She adores her family. She is currently sleeping on my tummy. When she feels she is not getting enough attention, she will often give a gentle tap on your face, to remind you to dole out the pats.

What a gift you gave your girl. She left this world surrounded by the people she loved. Sending hugs to you today..

Seniorboy does that paw thing: he likes to cuddle into me for his sleep and I'm supposed to gently stroke his flank while holding him tight - and The Paw comes up if I stop because I want to go to sleep!

(He's in a foul mood at the moment because I've made the house too hot for him Confused so he's just lying on top of the bed sulking. The Paw is safely tucked away.)

She used to lick my eyelids when she wanted me to wake up. Hmm

Chocbix

I know exactly what you mean about that 'sweet' smell. I can still smell her, it is a lovely scent that I can't describe. Not warm fur or perfume just a 'scent' that was her essence.

I want to bottle it.

Yes it is more of her essence than anything. As she mostly smelt of chicken!

Maybe they want us to know they are still around, as a source of comfort Thanks

I had a beautiful black and white rescue that moved in by following the shared flat cats into the house via my window. I found him under my bed, riddled with fleas and cuts. He was the softest cat ever. I cleaned him, fed him and spent two wonderful years with a black and white cat scarf around me neck when I needed to do something and he wanted a cuddle.

He slept on my bed every night and purred like a machine. I called him Jake and he was utterly wonderful. After two years he stopped eating and got thin, the vet did some bloods and news was not good. So I held him for one last cuddle as he was kissed away. Then I carried my empty cat basket home sobbing through Camberwell.

I am now squashed by two other rescue cats who also have huge personalities and peculiarities but I miss having one I can drape round my neck.

Ruby, I'm so sorry. I love tabby cats.
Actually, I love all cats.
At the moment we have two black and white cats, a tubby tabby, a black cat and a tortie.

My dear little black and white girl was a rescue who came to us last year as a tiny scared bony little scrap.
She now bosses the dogs and other cats and we adore her. She is the most independent cat we have ever owned so when she deigns to sit on you for a tickle you know you are truely honoured so stop everything and give her 100% attention
She loves having her face squeezed and will push it into your hand repeatedly.

So sorry Ruby.

My own tabby is sat by me now. He's an old man now and we've had him since '95 as a little kitty. He's on medication for his thyroid and has been for a year or more.

He gave us a big scare at Easter and had a trip to the vets, he's got a lump in his belly and we were told he had a few weeks left. He was given steroids and he really picked up.

He was great for a few weeks, then dipped back down.

He's hovering now in a state where he's wobbly on his back legs and doing very little apart from sleeping, eating and going to the loo.

However, he cries loudly for treats and still chooses to go out for his business and to sleep in the garden.

So he's still with us and we are just waiting for the day when we see that he feels too poorly to go on, but can't bring ourselves to take him too early either.

Ruby - I am so terribly sorry to hear of the loss of your little cat.

We rescued a little girl cat from the Cats Protection only 18 weeks ago today and the love, affection and laughs she has brought us in such a short time is amazing.

Like Giles cat upthread, she is a useless cat!
She is clumsy, un-coordinated and cannot climb or jump properly. We have no history for her so she may have been a house-cat in her previous home.

This is the first time I have owned a cat and I can now understand the utter love and devotion that these little creatures entwine into our hearts.

Big hugs Ruby.

So sorry Ruby :( I lost my boy (also 12) on Tuesday and the grief is very raw.

But your girl was loved.. that's what matters most.

My stupid lovely boy used to lie along side me on the sofa at night.. then roll over, and fall off. Every damn time. Grin I'm sure I will never have another cat so lacking control of his own body!!

How's that for stupid.

SmallDog got stuck inside a pillow case earlier this week. I swear that the cat was laughing at him as he writhed and squeaked.
