The litter tray

Lily pollen and cats

My old female cat may have ingested lily pollen Sad. I've taken her to the vets and they've kept her in to be put on a drip and blood test tomorrow. I am so worried. I'm not sure if she's actually licked herself where the pollen is or not. She brushed against one lily flower where I'd put one on the kitchen window sill after it broke off from the main bunch (which are out of reach). She had been on the window sill to pinch half a pouch of cat food up there. I don't really know why I'm posting. I just pray she's going to be ok and to let people know about how poisonous lilies are to cats.

Oh dear. I hope she'll be OK. It's great that you got help for her immediately. Personally I won't have lilies in the house at all.

I really think the warnings should be made much more prominent on bunches of flowers, and florists should enquire about whether flowers are going to a household with cats before making up bouquets.

I'm hoping for good news for you both.

Yes I'll never have them in the house again. The vet had just called to say she wouldn't let them either shave off the fur with pollen on it or get the activated charcoal into her! He seems to think that because there's no sign of pollen around her mouth she probably hasn't licked if off her fur Hmm I'm not so sure, she's pretty fastidious and could have cleaned it off her mouth etc. they will blood test her tomorrow (under sedation in necessary). I'm concerned they haven't actually really started treatment until approx 1.5-2 hours after I left her there tbh.

One of my cats ingested lilly pollen when she was a tiny kitten - all round her muzzle. She stayed overnight in the vet hospital, was on a drip and had blood tests. She is absolutely fine and is now 6 years old and very healthy.

It sounds like you got her treated promptly which is great - fingers crossed and sending get better vibes her way. Post an update -thinking about you!

Thanks Amelie, that's heartening to hear. I'm trying to think that if she'd ingested it she wouldn't be quite as 'feisty' as she's been at the vets! At least we'll know by tomorrow afternoon if there's any kidney damage.

My two kittens also decided to eat my lilies. They were sick a couple of times and had the runs. They drank plenty of water and they were fine the next day.
